Most of the sound is the combination of the coupe midpipe and muffler.

Subaru's are unique in their header design from the factory, and that prevents you from getting the G/Z sound, period. APS makes some equal length headers for the WRX.

Even if you went though the trouble, your exhaust won't be as high pitched as a G; the exhaust pulses are different when you compare a H4 vs 60 degree V6.

Call me crazy but i love the sound of your exhaust =). Its a distinct sound that comes STOCK! For my boxer rumble, i have to switch out to another catback. But the cops on everyones *** lately, this might be what i am looking for. It's either this or get rid of the resonator and put a straight pipe in it. So mid pipe + muffler? Anyone want to sell it? And also, is the 350z exhaust the same as your guys? They have the same tone i think right?

You can get rumble from using a stock STI catback. We just put one on our FXT this weekend and it rumbles, but isn't super loud and it looks stock. If you want to stay with the stock look you can gut your downpipe cats and run the stock exhaust. If you do this you will need some kind of mgt like Accessport or something to make sure the car is running the correct maps.

Remember that the video of the Probe GT, it is still a v6 not a H/I4 so of course it would sound more like a G with any exhaust esp a G exhaust. I still don't think you are going to get that sound from just the exhaust. I have had a N/A with equal length, and a turbo with equal length and it did not sound anything close to a G.

My LGT stage 2+ with an equal length header

My 06 Legacy 2.5i Se with an equal length header

Hm. I already have the AP and the COBB downpipe. It's just the catback is a little too quiet for me. I'd like to see what it sounds like with the boxer rumble and the g tone. Might be one of a kind =).

So let me get this straight... Some of the sound is in the engine right? And some of it has to do with the COUPE mid pipe and COUPE/SEDAN muffler? Any of the sound has to do with the resonator?

Thanks for all the replies.

im not sure if this helps or not but if u listen to a g35 without a muffler it sounds similiar but alot louder with a little raspyness... so im guessing its the motor that gives it that unique sound. think about it.... a muffler is just muffling the sound... not creating it... no way do i think it will make a subaru sound like a g...

A G without the muffler loses that unique tone. The tone comes from the muffler.

All 60 degree V6's have a similar sound.

You won't be able to get a boxer-4 to sound like a V6 motor.

I'm a bigtime car-sound, specific-engine sound guy... and you can usually tell the configuration of a motor just by the way it sounds, regardless of what the exhaust is that it's running. Generally you can differentiate an inline 4 from a boxer-4 from a flat-6 from a V6 from a straight-6 from a V8 from a V10 from a V12 from a rotary or anything else.... although the difference between a V10 and a V12 is generally not as distinct as with the others.

It's mostly the motor that makes the sound, and the exhaust usually accentuates or muffles it, but there's only a limited range of alteration that you can do to the sound emitted from the cars engine by reconfiguring the exhaust within reason.
