Stuck in fail safe after hard stop

I should have posted in this forum the first time...after coming to a hard stop my car is now stuck in neutral ....anyone know how to fix this?

Do you drive a MT or AT?

Have you tried turning the car on and off?

Are you sure the brake pads arn't stuck on the rotor?

dont the automatics have a shift-lock override thing? little square somewhere that you pop a cover off of and use a screwdriver or something?
