Angry G35 Coupe problems.. Is the dealership ripping me off?

Hey guys,

I recently purchased a 2005 G35 Coupe as a certified vehicle from a local Infiniti dealership, and I thought that the car was in "perfect" condition. Everything seemed to be going good until about a 2 weeks ago when my engine starting making a high pitch squealing sound. The car was purchased with a little under 27,000 miles, and I put maybe around 700 miles onto it. What I don't understand is how come the dealership is charging me close to $4000 in parts and labor when the only thing they said was wrong in the vehicle was the "o2 sensor" and the timing chain.

These are the following quotes they gave me after their "thorough inspection."

"both cats/both rear o2 sensor (fuel consumption)" Labor: $480. Parts: $3,035.
"drive belts (squeal on starts)" Labor: $169.95 Parts: Included.

This is going to run me 3,961.32 in total after tax, and I was wondering if their estimates sounded correct?

Thanks,

Marc.

Hey thanks for the quick replies.

Well, the thing is they told me that under the "warranty" it would only be covered if it was defective. What they said was that I "damaged it" somehow.. which I can say is complete bull since I barely even drive my car out, other than for school and food here and there. I was wondering, since the o2 sensors send its information to the ECU, is there a way the ECU can show me when the o2 sensors even went bad in the first place? If they did go bad before I purchased this vehicle, I am going to definitely cause a storm in there.

Why are they trying to make you buy new cats? That doesn't even make sense.

just let them do the belts, that's probably what's causing squealing. No way in hell your cats are bad at 27k miles

yes, your cats should last MUCH longer

not to mention that I dont think your O2 sensor should be bad either, but s**t happens. dont let your dealer jerk you around, you should be covered under warranty. if not there, then another dealer.

good luck.

as for the squeals, maybe you dont even need new belts

try going to a mechanic and see if they can be readjusted/lubed.

theres no way your cats are damaged unless you bottomed out pretty damn hard, but other parts on the undercarriage would be damaged. Like ^^ he said above, its prob your belts that are squealing and how could the o2 sensor be damaged already, shouldnt that be covered under warranty.

I heard that replacing catalyst or something about muffler is warrantied about 7 years, cuz I changed my catalyst for free (cracked and sounded like ****). It was not g35, but c240 (6years old, warranty expired). The dealer said that even though the warranty expired, muffler is free under somthing policy in America...

Anyway, good luck~!

I wouldn't even bother with that dealer anymore. It doesn't look like they have any intention to treat you right. Take your business elsewhere.

The squealing noises should be from worn out/cracking belts, have them replaced and retensioned and the noise should go away...

Now about the cats... Not sure about the condition of your car, do you think you could take pix of the underside of the car, and specifically the cats and y pipe? If your cats got hit and the inner ceramic started falling apart, then that would f up the o2 sensors. also if there were mods which made the car run rich or too lean, this could cause premature failure of the cats... Catalytic converters are expensive as hell... If they really are damaged, and you can't get warranty on them because of that, try and get some from a local g which is putting on headers.

Did they say specifically what parts need to be replaced and what kind of damage was done to them?

The problem is that when the dealer changes things under warranty, they can be audited and have the "failed" parts returned to the manufacturer for inspection... If the parts look damaged or tampered with, the manufacturer will take back the money from the dealer and then the dealer may charge that back to you. Since dealers don't like the idea of eating someone elses bills, they tend to err on safety rather than just randomly changing parts at will.

I got a question, sorry to semi-hi jack the thread, but can you buy your own parts and have infiniti install them for you?
