I have only tied it down once, If I was to leave it for a long period or the forcast was for high winds I would. It fits very well, I have had the winds blow the cover off the BBQ near it but the cover stays secure on the car.

I bought mine during the past summer and I it really does not need it yet. I will probably wash it in the Spring. The little booklet you get with it gives good washing instructions.
