Rollover rating

Just posting this becuase I wonder how the G35 did, but I couldn't find any test results. I am sure the G is not far behind. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,See story below

One Car Earns Top Rollover Rating In New Tests

POSTED: 1:40 pm EDT June 7, 2004

Only one of the 33 vehicles that the federal government tested recently has earned the highest safety rating in measuring how easily they roll over.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released the latest test results Monday on SaferCar.gov.

The Mazda RX-8 sports car was the only vehicle to earn a five-stars rollover rating. That means the risk is less than 10 percent that it will roll over in a single-car crash.

The 2004 Toyota Solara coupe and the 2005 Chevrolet Equinox 4x4 are the only vehicles in the latest batch to earn the top rating of five stars for frontal and side impact crash tests.

Twenty-two vehicles earned four-star rollover ratings, with a rollover risk of 10 to 20 percent.

Ten sport utility vehicles earned three stars, with a rollover risk of 20 to 30 percent.

They included various models of the Chevrolet Tahoe, Dodge Durango, Ford Explorer, GMC Yukon and Mercury Mountaineer.

Recent testing included the last releases for the 2004 model year, as well as some early 2005 models.

Re: Rollover rating

Lets see. Rollover safety in a Rx-8 is better than a G coupe. Does that make it safer overall? NO. RX is lighter and lower (i believe from the driver aspect) - that alone makes a G safer. What would you want to be in if you DID rollover??? That is the question. Again - I'll take the G since it's no rolly polly anyway. Those RX's look like hummer ramps!

Re: Rollover rating

Rollover paranoia is one of the reasons why I got the coupe. Used to be a big truck/suv fan.

Re: Rollover rating

Just so you guys know I am not saying that the Rx-8 is safer. I just posted the story because I wondered how the G did. Don't get me wrong I would rather have a G anyday even if it was not as safe as other cars on the road.

Re: Rollover rating

Under 10 could be 9.49 and between 10 and 20 could be 10.5 vs 19.9.............unfortunately they don't publish the numbers in an easy to find place...........however:

Re: Rollover rating

Yeah the coupe is lower than in my sedan ~ i tower over the 8. I watched the offset frontal crash testing and was convinced this is the car to be in not to mention better than BMW ratings overall from the NTSB or NHSTA (whichever). The RX-8 will prob be very safe if it doesn't roll over - but I'll bet a million nickels were all glad we are in the G with our fams when the 18 wheeler rolls off line on a 2 lane. Staying upright is preventitive and both cars rock. Sure the 8 may stay upright with its lighter lower weight but again...which car do you want to be in when you roll 10 times?

This kind of attention for a rolloever stat is overbaked...that stat means nothing - should people stop buying audis and pacificas becasue they might have more of a propensity to roll than in a 8? There is .00001% difference in overall safety for this one item isolated IMO. If all the other factors are equal then this is meaningless for puposes of differentiation.

Re: Rollover rating

If I remember correctly, G35 coupe was not tested in this study. RX-8 was first in the list tested. The G35 coupe was NOT on the list.

Re: Rollover rating

IIRC, NHTSA has not done a test on the G35 Coupe period. Seems like the inside story is everytime they acquire a G35 Coupe for crash testing, it would magically dissapear before the test. Seems like certain NHTSA workers can't stand such beautiful cars being crashed into scraps, formed a coalition dedicated to rescue G35Cs. So we might never see a NHTSA test of the G35C, even though we all know the safety rating is top of the chart.

Re: Rollover rating

I would expect some similarities in coupe and sedan performance - the g sedan was crushed in the front and perfect in the cabin.

Re: Rollover rating

I was watching a show on car crashes (Modern Marvels on the history channel) and when they were showing how they do crash testing they were using a 2003 G35 sedan. Held up pretty well!

BTW, they have an episode about the Autobahn running tonight with some good 200+mph footage.

Re: Rollover rating

doesnt it bother you guys that there are no crash test results for the coupe? its kinda scares me cos i read stories about ppl crashing their G or Z and it ends up in a fatality. maybe there's a very bad reason that there are no crash test results for the car, maybe it does too poorly to publish?
