Defective Stock Rims???
Defective Stock Rims???
Over the last 3 days I have met 3 people including myself who are having issues with the stock rims. My coupe is 2004 6MT and the other 2 were 2003. Both of the other cars have black marks that look almost like burns on the interior of their rims and have started to flake and peel. One was so bad that it looked like pinkish under the peeling. My rims just look stained, almost like brake dust or tire dressing was burned into the rim but they said that's how theirs started. I had a pro detailer try to clean my rims and they couldn't get it off with mild cleaner and didn't want to try harsh cleansers because of the other cars damages. Has anyone heard of ongoing flaking, peeling or staining problems with the stock 18's. One guy said he spoke to infiniti and they acknowledged that the coupe 18's were problematic and that was part of the reason that they changed the rims for 2005. Any insight would be appreciated. I left this in the general forum because it isn't a technical wheel problem just a request for info???

Re: Defective Stock Rims???
I have the same problem. I have a 2004 6mt G35 coupe and some of my rims are "stained" on the outside. It does almost look like brake dust that has stained the rims. I've tried cleaning with soap but it doesn't come off and I didn't wan tto scrub too hard for fear of damaging the rims. I was planning on taking it into the dealer for warranty. I've had my car for a little over 2 months now, but only have 1700 miles. This shouldn't happen.
Re: Defective Stock Rims???
On day 3 of my ownership I noticed one wheel had a spoke that seemed to be missing a clear coat. It appeared fine but was rougher to the touch than the others. I took her in and they replaced it under warranty.

Did you notice that mark when you picked it up? I have heard of some people reporting that as soon as they took delivery. It is my theory that those marks were made perhaps during shipping where they put ties through the rim to secure the vehicle.
Re: Defective Stock Rims???
I'll tell you probrably happened. There was damage done to the wheels, the dealer tried to fix it and later on the new paint faded. This happened a number of times after my wheels were damaged by the dealer. The kept trying to fix it. I think that whatever they were trying to clean my rims with was now mixing good with the aftermarket fix. The discoloration never occured when I washed my car. It would always occur when I took it in and let them clean it. Thus I no longer have them clean my car. Finally they claimes that they used a new technique to repair the finish. This seems to be working so far.. no dicoloration YET.
My dealer also told me that Infiniti has ben denying warranty claims for rim dicoloration- citing environmental factors as the cause (what a bunch of $#!+) My opinion is that Infiniti should replace the 18's that are having the problems if indeed it is caused by environmental factors as I would expect that $700 a peice rims should be able to withstand normal environmental factors. For this reason this will probrably be my last Infiniti.
I had my Mazda Mx6 for 10 years and my rims for @ 8 years, when I sold them there was no discoloration and the rims were still near perfect condition. the cost for those rims...($250 each) Environmental factors my @$$! But I guess people have to just deal with it, at least that's Infiniti's attitude toward my concern. I hope others have better luck.

Re: Defective Stock Rims???
I had that pink color problem with one of mine and the dealer replaced it. I also have the black spot problem and plan on bringing it up when I bring the car in to have the defective radio replaced.
