Took the G to track !!!!!!

Right of let me clear things up.... it's NOT a 1/4 mile track. This is a racing track called beaver run out in PA not to far from pitsburgh.

Well I did 4 track runs....20-30 min each, runing against other cars. Unfortunatly i was placed in a novice class even though i should have been in the intermediate. never the less... it was fun.

Lets just put it this way..... in the straights the G OWNED ALL. in corners it wasnt all that. I have a stock car, so the suspension was not up to the par for this track...and the track was very unfogiven ( few cars crashed and few just spun out )

My opinon of my 2003 5at: this bish is just too heavy, too much body roll, and the stupid breaks started to give out after 15 min. So by the end of the day the breaks werent up to the gripping power and most of the time tended to lock up and causing me near control loss in corners. Tires were horrible as well... but did better then i expected.
5at... performed very well, but i dont really like how the torque converter only locks up in 2nd and not the other gears. Engine wise... i shifted for the most part around....5k due to slow traffic, but the pull of the engine was still significant. So the VQ engine... owns.

To all of you guys who never been to a race track... go ... its fun. Pay the 100-200+ track fee and enjoy. Just be careful. Cause the same day i was running... I saw NSX ZANARDI Addition #40 take a dump and it was totaled.

If someone can host a few pics for me ... i'll show you what its all about.

Re: Took the G to track !!!!!!

looks like fun!!

even though i have a ton of work done to my suspension, i think the stock G suspension is very capable. i truly think the weak link in your case is the 17" wheels. the 18's are much better, and the width you gain is truly beneficial. if you continue to track your car, may i suggest a set of hotchkis sway bars, and a light weight set of wider 18" wheels with some better, and slightly lower profile tires.

you will be amazed what a set of good tires will do for you!!

Have fun.

Re: Took the G to track !!!!!!

I recently did Big Willow at Willow Springs Raceway and I was overly impressed with the way my G performed. Now, I have stock 18's and the Brebro package, but my suspension is stock height. I finshed with the 3rd fastest time in my division, only to be beaten by a supercharged G by 3 sec, and I'm N/A! I figure, once I have my sways and suspension, I'll be in the same boat (Eagle1 was driving conservatively though). Did you drive with VDC on?

I'll tell you, going 120mph around turn 8 at Big Willow was like good sex!

2 G or NOT 2 G, there is no question!

Re: Took the G to track !!!!!!

With an auto tranny, you should be downshifting so you use engine braking in addition to using the regular brakes. This will help keep the brakes cooler.

Re: Took the G to track !!!!!!

I think all that blue tape probably weighed alot and slowed you down quite a bit.

What's up with that?

Re: Took the G to track !!!!!!

If anyones interested in taking their G's on a track join your regional SCCA. Threre are usually 10 events a year, 20 if you live close enough to 2 regions, and a few of them are usually at a track, the rest are sent up with cones in large parking lots. The cost is only $17 an event. Also in Solo II you race against the clock and don't have to worry about other non experienced drivers or debris from cars in front of you. I just got my G through the break in a will be racing it next weekend. Can't wait.

Re: Took the G to track !!!!!!

A suggestion for your braking difficulties.

Swap out to Motul 600 brake fluid and stillen metal matrix brake pads or any other full metallic pads on race day. You will notice MUCH MUCH less brake fade for under 100.00 in mods (the brake pads were 75.00 total front and rear for my Metal Matrix pads for my sedan). My brakes actually get better after a few 100-20 stops now as opposed to fading.

Tire pressure needs to be looked at too. Were you running stock 33 psi? or did you run it up as high as the side of the tire allows you to? 40 plus psi is much better for this kind of driving as long as the tire will let you go up that high. (For racing you need to look at HOT tire pressure not cold)
