Tire Monitor Question - New Wheels

This may sound like a stupid question, so I appologize ahead of time.... I have the 18" stock wheels and for the winter going to purchase 17" with snows on it. How would that affect the tire monitor system. I assumed that the system sends a signal from the tire. How does it work? Will the new set of wheels work with the system? It is hard wired somehow?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Tire Monitor Question - New Wheels

Behind the glove box there is a sensor. In each tire there is a sensor attached to the valve stem, protruding inside of the tire.

When the PSI gets below 28, a signal is transmitted to that receiver and the light lights up and an alarm sounds briefly.

Whether it will work in a different wheel, depends on the wheel. Good luck finding out, it is nearly impossible to get a tire dealer to tell you accurately whether or not the TPM will work in any given wheel. I've been trying to find out for weeks and different vendors will give you different answers.

Only way to know for sure is ask someone who has done it on a particular wheel. Don't forget to ask them what shop did it, and whether or not that shop needed to modify the devices at all.

If you want to know it will work FOR SURE, use only Infiniti or Nismo wheels.

Re: Tire Monitor Question - New Wheels

The tire pressure sensors themselves are ~$400 each! So if you want 4 for your 4 new wheels, it is ~$1600! Ouch, that's a lot of $$

Another thing, when you switch the wheels, you have to get the dealer to "register" the sensors, or it will not pick them up. So when you have the winter wheels on, and change to the summer, you have to tell the computer to pick up signals from the sensors on the summer tires.

I put aftermarker wheels on my car, and they took the sensors off my 18"s and put it on my new wheels. As far as 2 different sets of sensors, that wont work. You will have to visit the dealer each time.

I have a set of tire pressure sensors if your interested in buying them.

I'm not saying your wrong but when I got a flat and went to Sears they removed the tire, patched and plugged, then reinstalled and rebalanced. Why didn't I have to take it to Infiniti for a "reset"? As far as I can tell from the Service Manual, they don't know what wheel they are on, they merely measure the pressure and alert the sensor under the glove box when it's below 28PSI.

i dont think it works with new wheels because my low tire pressure light came on twice already when i dont have low tire pressure with my 19s..

That's not what I'm saying at all. What I'm saying is if you have 2 sets of rims/tires/tire pressure sensors it gets more complicated. When you take the 4 summer tires off and put the 4 winter tires on, the dealer has to register the sensors for the winter rims. If you don't do that, the computer will be listening for the summer rims (tire pressure sensors), and will not get any status.

You took one rim (and tire pressure sensor) off, and then put the same rim (and tire pressure sensor) back on. In that case there is no need for a reset. The problem is when you take one tire pressure sensor off of the car, and put a different tire pressure sensor back on.

Oh I see. Thanks for clearing that up. It's having TWO sets of sensors that requires the reset.

Re: Tire Monitor Question - New Wheels

I have a separte set of rubbers+rims (17") for winter. The TMPS is intelligent enough to not light up the low-pressure light if it doesn't get a signal from all four tires. I had it this way in my '04 coupe this winter and had no problems with the TPMS system, other than the fact that if I had a puncture or low pressure I wouldn't be informed about it on my dash... not worse than the '03s with no TPMS. I don't see any reason to buy extra sensors and install them in your aftermarket rims..... One more thing: If you got the 6MT, make sure that your winter rims have enough clearance to accomodate the brembos!
