Ya i did the same thing man...Hurts don't it? I did what the above post mentioned about heating with a hair dryer (keep pouring water over it to keep it moist and not damage the clear coat when heating) and with lots of muscles i was able to pop it right back out with hardly any noticeable damage. You really have to look for it now. Try this first then if you frick it up you can always buy a new one.

Same thing here. Cost me about $550 to repair. You got hit in the crumple zone, so thats what makes it nearly impossible to repair and why it looks so badly damaged even at such a slow crash. Thats why IIHS gave us such a poor rating for 5 mph crashes. Here's my accident:

when you said "with lots of muscles", did you have to dismantle the bumper and push it out from the inside?

Re: What the heck was our bumper made of?

to be honest bakashan, pushing it out would probably be a waste of time. You'd still have to repaint it and it will definitely look far from new. In addition, it's a plastic cover so I don't think you can push out plastic...that hammering only goes for steel/metal, i believe. I asked my body shop the same question when I got into my accident and they had to get me a new bumper. When hit in the crumple zone, it is near impossible to fix.

Re: What the heck was our bumper made of?

I learned the hard way, when someone hit and cracked my old car's bumper and got away with it (didn't see who did it, obviously), that it's worth the extra $3-$5/month to have your comprehensive deductible lowered from $500 to $50. Yes, it really IS that insignificant of a monthly premium hike and I highly recommend everyone look into it. Had I known about that before, I would have changed it a long time ago.

Re: What the heck was our bumper made of?

No, I didn't have to dismantle the bumper..I just got under there as much as a i could and was able to lodge my hand up in there. There's not much room to work with, but once it was warm enough, It just kinda popped out. Start from the outside of the indent and work your way around it..I have very minimal damage and rewaxed over it and its not noticeable anymore. See if you can slide under the car and get your hand up in there and feel the bump. If you can, you can push it out. The sooner the better tho...It's worth a shot anyways if its gonna save you 500+ bucks

Went to Seidner's Collision Centers today, they won't even give me a professional estimate. The guy just kind of looked at my car and said "definitely over $500, more like $800 - $900. . ." How the heck did you guys fixed if for $500? Well, I'm definitely lowering my deductable, if it's less than $100 extra. For those of you with the same damage, did your insurance go up for this?

Re: What the heck was our bumper made of?

My deductible is $1G so I paid out of pocket, thus I didn't report to the insurance company so my premium stays the same. As for the $800 price tag on fixing that, the quote is outrageous! Its $184 for a new bumper (something around that) + $325 (painting the bumper and blending the fenders) + $50-100 for removing the old bumper and installing the new bumper. (I'm estimating towards the more expensive side). At the very most that should be around $600. Shady body shops will try to squeeze money out of you saying that you need to replace the rear reinforcement steel bar and all that (which will cost upwards of $1000). Don't believe them. A crash like that is just cosmetic work. My body shop did it for $550, and my bumper looked brand new. My paint matches and you can't tell the difference. For a case like this, there's no real need to go to the best body shop around, because matching paint (esp. on DG) and blending it won't be that hard. Great body shops are needed more for more detailed collisions. But don't get me wrong, don't go to El Cheapo Automobilo. Just go to a reasonable and good shop. This is a simple paint and replace body work repair. Hope my input helps.

Re: What the heck was our bumper made of?

Thanks for the input guys. Just got back from "Caliber Collision Centers" in Chino Hills, CA. They have the "BEST" price estimate I got so far. (They might as well just rob me while I was there!!)

$295.53 _ parts
$428.00 _ body labor (10.7 hrs @ $40/hr)
$264.00 _ paint labor (6.6 hrs @ $40/hr)
$171.00 _ paint supplies (6.6 hrs @ $26/hr)
$36.50 _ sublet/misc.
$36.90 _ tax
TOTAL $1232.53!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK, so these guys are so professional that it'll take them 10 hours to take off and put on a bumper? I really want to see them sit infront of a bucket of paint and swirl it for 6 hours straight!
Those who got their bumper replaced for $600 less, pleeeeease tell me how it happened. When ever they asked if I'm going through insurance, I said yes. Is that why they jacked up the price? Would it be cheeper if I said I'm paying it out of my own pocket?

Re: What the heck was our bumper made of?

(1) I paid cash. I think it would probably be cheaper if you said you were going out of your pocket. What's your deductible? First say you're paying in cash, and see what they quote you. It's ridiculous for $1,000. Question all parts of the price breakdown....like asking why it takes 10 hours to take off the bumper and to put it back on.

(2) Keep on shopping around and show that you're knowledgable. Just say, "well I figure you guys need to buy a new bumper cover (quote the cover price), and to paint and blend the parts. Would the fix cost around $600? If no, then why the additional costs?"

Re: What the heck was our bumper made of?

Regarding the change from $500 to $50, I would like to know which insurance company you have??? I work in the insurance industry and the last time I remember seen a $50 deductible was in the 80s. Most insurance companies now a days start at $250.

Removing the back bumper is not a big deal at all. I wish I would have taken pictures and make a DIY write up on it when I did it.

Re: What the heck was our bumper made of?

I have StateFarm with $500 deduct. Haven't asked my agent, but wondering how much more would my premiums be if I lower the deductible to $100. (Does "full coverage" mean $0 deductible?) I currently paying $1400 annually.
