i was planning on taking my car in for the 1st oil change / service i have 1500 miles and was wondering what i needed to have done and also how many bottles of oil i would need. I think the best oil for warm tempatures (socal) would be 5w-30 right guys?

Get one 5-quart Mobil One 5w30 bottle at Wal Mart for $20. I live in SoCal, and that's what I did.

The oem filter is designed to function well for 3,750 miles or 90 days so that may be the limit even with synthetics.......you still have to change the filter.

Even premium filters Amsoil, Mobil 1, Pure 1, etc don't have the filter area to last much beyond 5,000 miles.

Guess the point is if you change every 90 days almost any decent oil will do unless you need the expanded temperature ranges of synthetics.........or just want the extreme temperature protection in the event of an overheat.

5 quarts of sump capacity is small considering the power production potential of the engine.

 

The Mobil m-108 is the exact size as the oem, but you can get a very slightly larger filter, the m-110 that also fits and that is what I use.

I agree (once again) with Q45 Tech here, that the sump is not really very big for such a large 3.5L engine. Especially for my application with FI where heat is potentially even more of an issue. Accordingly I am going to expand the capacity to six quarts with a bigger pan. (My little 944turbo porsche with its 2.5litre engine and four cylinders had a bigger oil and coolant capacity as I recall...I need to go check that again).

I went to a short course about bearings a month ago (paid for by my co.), and there were some guys there from lube companies.

Synthetics have more capacity for capturing/suspending contaminants, but the filters do get clogged. To save money and natural resources, you can probably keep your oil for about 7000 miles but change out the filter half-way through. If it is cold/winter, you might want to change out the oil sooner, because of water and condensation getting into the oil.

If your oil is still very light-colored after 3k, you don't need to change it out.

But for a new car I would change out the oil after 1k or 1500

 

I was told for your first oil change to use regular oil and then use synthetic after that? At least thats what i heard.

I would bring 6 quarts with you. I've changed my oil twice with the mobil 1 synthetic and each time all 6 quarts were used. The dealer could be just robbing my 6th quart but they say the car takes a lil over 5. BE on the safe side..... whats the extra 5 bux! By the way, use the nissan oil filter, especially if you have the free oil plan. Nissan designed the car....use their filter!

Your running the risk of over filling! Most people add 5. Full is really about 4.7~4.8, but it will take all 5.

6 is overkill!

I use a 8000 mile (about 6 months) interval in my QX4 which has the same engine. I determined this by testing at Blackstone Labs. I intend to do the same test on my G35 coupe after 20,000 miles on the engine. I also use the mobil1 filter as I have seen several research projects that say it and the Purolator Pure One are the best made. The filter has no problem with 8000 miles and some like BMW and Corvette take it 10 or 15k.
