G35 duct into a Z-tube

i just recieved and installed my z-tube and pop charger today. I looked into the stock air duct and saw the 2 holes for the resonator or whatever u call it. Couldn't u seal those holes and basically have a Z-tube?

Re: G35 duct into a Z-tube

Hi al, I think the openings on both the plenum side and airbox side are identical aren't they? -- they have to be to fit.

Anyway, I happen to have a spare Z tube kicking around (that I'm too lazy to sell) and I compared it to the OEM tube and the diameters look identical...

((Off topic, al503, I got the Racing Hart CPF Tunes! Thanks for your advice, help etc.))

Anyway, to answer the original question: yes -- you can do exactly what you said. Remove the G tube, carefully remove both the long resonator on the bottom and the "tupperware" one on top (see pic), then carefully seal the holes and you essentially have a Z tube. The seal has to be clean otherwise you might get some unwanted turbulence in there.

Anyway, some guys have already done just that. I'm sure you can find the posts with all the details if you do a search.

Re: G35 duct into a Z-tube

The openings are the same diameter. However, isn't the middle of the tube larger with the z-tube? I thought that the stock was 1/2" smaller in diameter. However, I'll take your word for it since you have it in front of you.

Good choice on the wheels. Them suckers is light. I couldn't believe how much lighter they were than the stockers. You're gonna get a lot of stares and a few thumbs up now.

You mentioned something about a ti exhaust made for the G. Were you talking about the JIC?

This isn't the thread I was thinking of, but it shows that what you suggested has been done successfully.

This is why I thought it was a smaller diameter. Nothing against Neff, who probably got his information in the same manner. I think there was another thread that about the diameters that had the same info. FWIW:

Re: G35 duct into a Z-tube

Hey Al,

I think I was thinking of not the JIC but the R1 Amuse Titan or the Top Secret. A guy at one of our local meets told me that the staff at Bulletproof Automotive told him over the phone that the Amuse was coming out with a G-specific version of the Titan. I figured that seemed plausible, but when I PM'd him later he told me he might have been mixed up and may have been thinking of the Top Secret.

Well, at least that one's for sure. I waiting to find more info on it. Intense Motorsports and a few others will have it when it's released.

Anyway, me and a few local G's from our regional forum are taking our cars to the track this Saturday (one of the G's is a GReddy TT) and that's part of the reason why I got the Racing Harts and am waiting for a good Ti exhaust!

Can't wait!

Airbox side: G tube on the left, Z tube right...

From what I've read, Neffster knows his stuff so maybe I'm wrong. But here's a few pics of the openings. They are identical -- if anything, the G tube is about a 16th or a 32nd larger at the mouth than the Z (funny?). The G tube doesn't appear to narrow inside the tube, nor does the Z tube appear to be any bigger... both diameters look uniform through both tubes.
Anyway, don't mean to belabor the point...

Re: G35 duct into a Z-tube

plenum side with 3 inch CD roms:
- fits inside G tube snugly on left, doesn't fit into Z tube on right. This particular G tube is about a 16th of an inch larger at the mouth than this particular Z tube.
