Exclamation Metallic Burning Smell

Hi guys, I'm relatively new to the forums, and have had my 2006 G35 MT Coupe for about four or five weeks now. I bought it used with ~40K miles on it.

I first noticed a "metallic burning smell" coming through the vents when I opened the car up getting on the highway about a week and a half ago...I shifted each gear between 4.0-5.5K RPM, and when I checked the car's computer (via my ScanGuage II that is always connected) to make sure I didn't come too close to red-line, it said I maxed at ~6.1K RPM. No error codes or anything were found. The needle on the car's RPM gauge came close to 7K however...I would assume the SCII is more accurate of a measurement though??

When I got off the highway (the next exit) I smelled the same burning outside the car, most noticeably behind the vehicle. The smell inside the car came from the vents. I've smelled this twice since then...once again during aggressive acceleration, and once the day after (possibly the rest of the smell coming through the vents??) Occasionally, when I get out of the car after normal driving, there is a slight burning smell as well.

I have been driving MT cars for a long time, and I know I'm shifting properly...I'm not riding the clutch, etc...but I'm trying to figure out if shifting at high RPM is causing the smell...i.e. is it the clutch that's burning? I don't have experience working on cars (motorcycles is a different story ) so I don't know how to go about checking what this could be. Any help would be appreciated. I searched the forums quickly, but didn't find anything that sounded like a similar problem.

Thanks in advance! ~Rev

I know it's normal to have a smell after riding the car hard, but not sure about a "metallic" burning smell.. could it possibly be oil consumption? Have you checked to see if your oil levels were normal?

I would say its 95% sure the clutch is shot...
Guy before you probably drive it hard core.

Take it in to get it looked at by a trusting mechanic.
