Just test drove the G, couple Qs

Just test drove a 2004 G35 coupe with all the trimmings (including Nav), which is the way I'm interested in buying one. Of course I've read the Nissan announcement on the 2005s, so I'm prepared to wait until Dec to jump on board, but I have a few questions and observations:

1. I know the press release said the '05 G will come with 19"s, but the picture shown looks like the standard 17" wheels on the '04. Please tell me this is only an error..

2. When I test drove the car, the sales guy took me to a flat straight 1/2 mile abandoned alley :-) to test out the car's acceleration. I revved to about 3k rpm (I'm used to my AWD S4) and quickly feathered the clutch and punched it. What I got was a bit of tire spin, then the engine kind of cut power and seemed to bog, then we were off. Car definitely chirps into second...that's nice. When I read the vehicle literature it said the car has TCS that will cut engine power if it detects wheelspin. Ok, this sucks...bad. I don't remember seeing a button to defeat that like the VDC, is there?

3. On the passenger side there was a flip up cover over the DVD Nav input drive, can the Nav actually play regular MPEG-2 DVD movies? This would be really nice.

4. What's the deal with that cheap-*** first aid kit cover in the back seat armrest? First, there IS no center armrest in the back, and second, the flimsy cover doesn't even seat properly on a brand new car. What gives?

5. Is the throttle progression of the G35 the same as the 350Z? I'm told the 350 (and my test drive seemed to confirm it) has a very linear throttle, unlike most cars, which will give you 75% throttle in just the first inch of pedal travel or so. When I drove the G, it seemed like it was very sensitive in the first inch, making it a little difficult to get rolling smoothly (coupled with the short engagement clutch).

6. I'm interested in getting mine with the sideskirts and rear valence like I've seen in some gallery pics, but I don't want the rear spoiler. Should I order the aero kit without the spoiler then? Or are those skirts something different?

Whew, I appreciate all the help you can give. I'm serious about this car and I wasn't able to find any of the things I'm asking in the archives.

Re: Just test drove the G, couple Qs

1. The way I read the press release was that they will all come with 18"s, with the optional upgrade to 19"'s. I could be wrong and there was a thread on this.

2. The button to turn VDC off is right next to the trunk switch, to the left of the power mirror controls. As soon as you start the car it is on, until you press that button. There is however, a part made by another forum member where you can change this setting so that it is always off when you start the car until you turn it on. kptechnologies.net for more info. There is also a DIY on moving this button to the center console area if you were interested in doing that.

3. From the factory no. However, you can buy and install the very popular AV Electronic unit. Here is a thread regarding a group buy, there are a lot of threads on this topic in the Audio, Video section for more information.
https://g35driver.com/forums/showfla...&part=all&vc=1

4. I've heard this compliant before and even read where someone said they were going to have to make a custom arm rest back there. I can't remember who it was, but I remember I pm'ed them for more details and never heard a response.

5. I don't know about the throttle progression. Since these cars are so similiar I would presume that it is the same. As for the touchy pedal, when I test drove it I wasn't too sure about how it responded, but now I like it a lot. I think you automatically adjust.

6. Not too sure.

Hope this helps,

Nate

I wasn't clear. I'm looking for a switch to defeat the TCS, not the VDC. Does this exist?

Re: Just test drove the G, couple Qs

Hey Neon1. I'm an S4 convert myself. The new ride is at the dealer now getting prepped.

I don't have much to offer your questions, since I'm a noob myself. However, I don't believe they've published the looks of their 19s yet. I was thinking of waiting on the 2005, but the 6MT won't be out until December, and that was 6 months away at the time.

The side skirts you refer to sound like the splash guards. Those can be ordered separate ($200, I believe). There is no factory rear skirt or rocker panels, those are all aftermarket, if you were looking at those.

Without the spoiler, the aero package would be the under body diffusers, which I'm not sure if you can order separately.

Me, I went with a twilight blue, black interior, 6MT, Full aero (including spoiler, splash guards, front chin spoiler) and added the door panel trim pieces.

There was a TB next to mine on the lot with the door panel trim pieces, and my wife and I really liked how they complemented the lines on the car.

So I'm waiting for them to deliver the chin spoiler and door trim then install those and XM. It won't be until next week before I can pick it up.

I've already ordered the clear corners for the car. Parts are cheaper for this car than the S4.

Re: Just test drove the G, couple Qs

Neon.....TCS is called VDC in Infinitispeak. Its stands for Vehicle Dynamic Control and will make adjustements to wheels and engine. There is a VDC off button next to the trunk release. I've been told it "pretty much" shuts it off but there may be some cases where it will still engage even in the off condition.

I came fron a 96 A4 (not S4 unfortunately). While I love Audi's I was not happy with the poor reliability of the suspension. They under-engineered those and the bushings would go out on me after very short intervals. I only had the car for ~40k miles (bought it with 20k) and I went through a set and a half of them in the front while trying to determine a thumping noise...the dealer couldn't figure it out and just started replacing components). Anyway, I like the coupe's looks much more than the A4. While the A4 is very nice, I am surprised how many comments I get from a car that's been out on the market for 2 years already. The coupe isn't perfect but for my needs it hit the sweet spot that only a 911 would have met which I didn't want to spend that kind of cash on. Its a great car with a few minor deficiencies.

I purchased only the spash guards and added the front lip recently. I didn't like the spoiler either. You can get other aero kits if you want to spend a fair amound and have to paint. I stuck with the standard OEM kit and did the lip install on my own. Looks good enough for me. I have pics if you'd like to see it with a lip and no spoiler....send me pm of email address and I'll send them.

Good luck

3 kids, 1 wife....1 DG/Willow G Coupe.....what more could I need?

From what I understand you CAN order the diffusers seperately and they are just some pieces of plastic. I am not sure how much they really help though.

As for the rear armrest, I have a hard CD holder case that I bought from Target a few years ago that fits perfectly in the little cubbyhole. I guess it serves the purpose as an armrest too. I was actually surprised that our car came with a first aid kit.

Re: Just test drove the G, couple Qs

i chunked the first aid kit in the trunk and just have that pos cardboard thing thats wrapped in POS felt. I kinda was like WTF when i saw that too, but it wasnt a big enough deal to keep me from buying the car. I rarely put people in my back seats, and i will never ride back there... so it doesnt bother me. There is an aftermarket mod (someone above mentioned) that is available for i wanna say around $700 to make the stock nav read dvd's. I dont have nav but my mom's g35x does, and i dont really know how great the screen quality will be with stock equipment. I personally would save money on factory nav and the $700 dollar mod to watch dvd's and do something like what i have pictued belo wfor around $2000. That is one of the best quality screens and just looks incredibly playa to anyone that gets in/looks at ur car It's nav, dvd, mp3, and cd. U would have to do the double din convertion (there is a DIY in the audio/ electronics forum). The vdc button is located on the left hand side (i like this better than most cars that have it on the center console) i had a friend who was driving his mom's gs300 and his friends told him to take a turn really fast and he was liek "ALRIGHT" when he was just about to turn hi8s passenger thot it would be funny to hit his vdc... he did a cople of 360's and ran off the road into some grass about 2 feet from plowing some 100 foot tall pine trees... i realize that thats not something that everyone would have to deal with (im only 17 and so are my friends... so maturity is a worry of mine). The oem body kit isnt really worth it to me. I got the aero package because i wanted the wing and that was all. My dealer when i was first in there said tha ti didnt want the full aero kit and talked me out of it (i was planning on special ordering my car). Its not something that i really notice, and im gonna be glad i dont have it when i slam my car . there have been no released pictures of the 2k5 yet (as said above) and no one knows what the new wheels willl look like.

and something that no one else addressed about the gas pedal.... i noticed that after a couple of hundred miles my gas pedal started to not be so stiff/sensitive. Mayb ei just got used to it, but i really think that it changed in feel a little bit. Dont worry about clutch/accelerator feel.... u get used to it fast. this was my frist car t drive stick in (i learned around a neighborhood in my friend's m3 before i bought the car). As soon as i got it home, i took it out around town and stalled out maybe 3-4 times the first day... 2 the 2nd an once the 3rd. u seem like u know how to drive stick already, so if a beginner can learn that quickly, im sur eu can too. btw starts in that car are really easy... g's are incredibly easy to get into 1st gear, but 1st-2nd is a little hard to do smoothly.

Re: Just test drove the G, couple Qs

Apparently my post was worded poorly; that or you're just wrong.

"There have not been any pictures of the 2005 released from Infiniti yet and the final specs are subject to change"

See here: http://nissannews.com/multimedia/infiniti2005/g35.shtml

"The VDC off button is located on the left side near the trunk release"

Thanks, but I said it twice: I'm looking for the TCS defeat. Check the infiniti website under active safety features if you think I'm wrong, the fact is that TCS is a feature on the G, and it's something entirely different from VDC.

"Do you really think they would allow that?"

Why not? Never having owned a car with Nav, I know nothing about the stock systems, but as you can buy an aftermarket system at any Best Buy that will certainly play DVDs, I don't see why not. Hell, they put them in minivans in the front seat area.

"If it is a demo - it is not properly cared for. I wouldnt buy the car if you dont like the 1st aid kit"

Point taken. Thanks to the members who supplied constructive responses.

"There are many different aftermarket body kit options - if you dont like the spoiler - dont order it"

Must have worded this one poorly. What I was wondering was how you can get the side moldings from the dealership. What is this option called?

I'm not sure why your response has such a hostile tone to it, I'm just trying to get some help here.

Thanks again to all who have been really helpful.

I read an article from Infiniti that states "vehicle dynamic control (VDC) with traction control system (TCS)." That makes it sound as though the TCS is part of the VDC and would be turned off with the VDC button.

The pictures on the Nissan/Infiniti web site are of the 2004 - there have been no 2005 pictures posted!
