04 coupe. MPG vs Horsepower
#21
sadly...I have grown tired of my plane g35 coupe. I picked out the exact one i wanted. NO spoiler, Black. Tan interior. moonroof. nav. and got the windows blacked out. now i want a new car, but i dont. i know i can love my g35 again. i want better fuel econ and more horsepower. But ill settler for one or the other (either will let me lover her once again). what can i do to make my G get 25mpg? if not that, then what can i do to make my G get mid 13's? keep in mind im not rich and can't afford to make it a hybrid or add Turbo!
There are some things you can do that will give you a tiny bit of HP and also give you fuel economy gains at the same time. I'd start by getting a high-flow drop-in air filter element and a Z-tube(or a high-flow cone-style filter). I found that when I put my original K&N filter on my car, my fuel economy went up about 1.3 MPG across the board(I've since switched to an Amsoil EA-Nanofiber filter because the K&N let too much dirt by).
You could also replace your stock rims with some lightweight rims , which will make it both faster and more fuel efficient.... and make sure you run the stock size tires in the front and back(I lost some MPG when I went to 245's up front due to more rolling resistance and rotational mass) and that the tires are a lightweight brand and not some piece-of-junk heavyweight tires. Unfortunately, lightweight rims cost a lot of money... so this one is probably out of the question for you given that you said you're on a limited budget.
Depending on how serious you are about this too, you could try to hack off some weight from inside the car, such as removing the spare tire, jack and all the other junk in the trunk and replacing your stock battery with an Optima battery... but don't expect big gains from this, since most weight gains come from weight loss in the drivetrain and wheels.
A nice lightweight, free-flowing exhaust system will also contribute to both power and fuel economy gains for you.
I think that if you did all of those things, you might gain about 3 MPG across the board and your car will be a little quicker too.... but to be completely honest, it's probably not worth the money that it will cost to get you there. You're better off just spending the extra money on fuel and learning to accept the fact that a G35 is a quick car, but will never be a really fast car unless you are willing to spend $8K+ on it in mods.
