Automatic Tranny Fluid Change? What contents?
G35 auto tranny states that it needs Nissan J tranny fluid. ANyone know what so special about it. and what's in it. Since some trannies can only take particular fluid due to ingridients.
Reason being.. i have 5AT with 13k on it and i want to change fluid in it to keep it new and fresh.
Anyone know what i'm talking about.

According to one of our local Nissan dealers, there are 3 different Nissan A/T fluids. All special and unique in themselves, and each with a very specific use. Apparantly our G automatics must use the type J fluid only, and no substitute. This fluid is synthetic and should be good for at least 50k klicks.
He further explained that should a tranny issue arrise, Nissan examines these 'faulty' transmissions closely to determine the cause, paying particular attention to the fluid and any additives.
From what I've learned, the fluid that comes with the car is top quality, unique, and cannot be improved on at all.
I've decided not to tamper with mine, and when it comes to maintenance, I'd leave it to Nissan to handle.
The maintenance/modification decision is entirely up to you, but be careful-- these automatics are very expensive as you can imagine.
Food for thought.......

Check the colour and smell. If there's any doubt, it's a good investment, and a lot cheaper than a new tranny down the road (maybe out of warranty) .. UGGG

that is one of the reasons why i posted this topic. Most people tend to neglect the ATF. Yes it doesnt get as hot as the engine oil, but it still needs changing in my opinion. your tranny goes through wear and tear and break in period just like the engine... and i dont see why people wouldnt change that dirty oil as well.
Based on my previous cars... i tried changing ATF every year. THING IS.... you cant really replace it fully, you can change a certain amount of it at a time unless you actually do flush. Which is good ... but not really necessary. There is a way to change as much fluid as possible but its a bit tricky.

Re: Automatic Tranny Fluid Change? What contents?
Well my thing is... what is so special about the MAtic J fluid. Usually current trannies use same type of fluid. like Dexron III and soo on. I doubth Nissan went ahead and designed their own fluid from scratch.
that is why i would want to know what is in Nissan J fluid. If i can find the right ingridient in say AMSOIL or Royal Purple i might switch to those.
For example... my Honda prelude(BB6) was required to use a SPECIAL honda fluid... (just like nissan says for G) but after i found out the special ingridients of honda fluid, i switched to AMSOIL... which turned out to be better for me... cause the tranny responded much better in winter cold weather shifting and as well as smoother shifts.
that is why i would like to do the same to G tranny.

Send it to a chemical lab and have it analysed by infrared spectography.
By the way Nissan has outsourced it's transmission design to JATCO [use to own half of the company].....Jatco calls the shots on fluid designed to function with the NEW dual clutch lock up convertor.
Suppliers now stand behind the 70k warranty so they are required to pay a portion of failures.
