My G35 vs. Shelby cobra 427

So im on my way home and im cruising down Carson street in Long Beach. Its a 3 lane road and up at the next stop light is the most beautiful car I have ever seen. Its a 427 Shelby cobra year unknown. The lane to his right is open so I swoop over there and line up. The other side of the street is one of those deals where my lane merges into his lane. I can't describe the sound it made at idle but it was loud enough that I could hardly hear my engine while I was reving it up. I know i'm going to get blown away but to be honest I just want to hear that thing bone out. The light switches and you just hear a VROOOOOOOWHOOOOOAAOOOOOOOOOOOOM (indescribable). He literally pulled at least 1 car length by the time we were across the intersection. Then he hit second gear and just slowly drove away as I creamed my pants. Say what you will about American muscle cars but I would take that thing over any other vehicle on the road. Simply perfect.

Now, I am going to look up the cost on those things and start saving.

Those guys are a treat to look at, to hear, and even to get beat by I'm sure.
Not bad for a 50 year old car (design). I've seen a few up here on the street and at the races (copies? I don't know- prolly)
Gotta be an ultimate ride.....wow.

It's still American. yes yes. Spare me the lecture about the beauty and art of American engineering. The best sound for me was getting owned by an E55. 5500 German cc's of supercharged V8 power.

Good loss I guess? =)

Re: My G35 vs. Shelby cobra 427

I've actually gotten to drive a REAL Shelby Cobra 427 when I worked at a car auction once. I drove it from the showroom to the parking garage. What a sexy b!tch. Uncomfortable as hell to get in but I'd take it any day.

I also got to drive about 5 Ferrari's, a '93 Mustang Cobra w/ 1000 miles on it, a Lambo SUV (forgot what these are called), a Lotus 340R (illegal in states, what a go-kart! see pic below), and others I can't remember right now.

More than likely it was a replica, you rarely see the real ones other than in garages and at vintage meets. I see quite a few replicas around the Northern Virginia area, particullarly on cruise nights.

Check out http://www.factoryfive.com. Not too bad for $12k, a basketcase '86-93 5.0 Mustang, and a few hundred hours of your time.

Re: My G35 vs. Shelby cobra 427

Most are replicas as originals go for $400K on up. I think one at Barret Jackson went for somewhere near a million. They are by far my favorite car. There are several companies that make replicas (usually just rolling chassis as they are not legally able to sell a complete car due to registration/inspection issues unless you have enough $$ to bypass it). My friend's brother in law has one that is out of control. I believe his was built in Utah but the chassis and body came from Poland, hand welded etc. (Most replicas use fiberglass b/c they are cheaper). The hand/metalwork is incredible! He didn't even have his painted, left the body as bare brushed aluminum. He was also able to find a genuine 427 motor. Let me tell you all something, it's friggin INSANE!!! He took me for a ride and I have been smiling from ear to ear ever since. Since then he actually sent the car back to Utah (they mistakenly put the wrong rear in) to change the rear and while they were at it, had them bore and stroke the motor! I am trying to get another test ride soon! All I know is, the last time, he barely punched it and we were at 90mph! So fast, and not to mention the best part of American Muscle...a TON of torque!! The scariest thing is that when your riding in it, your a$$ is about 2 inches off the ground and you head sticks above the "windshield". When you're doing 80, it feels like 200!!! An absolute awesome car! The price is basically....you get what you pay for. I think his was over $100K. There are plenty of companies that have them cheaper, but essentially, you get what you pay for. To me, if you're going to go that route, the 5.0 is just not worth it!

Justice, if you didn't have the SC, you'd have gotten beaten even worse. Can you make it out to LACR tonight? I'd love to see your car run.

Superformance makes a very nice Cobra replica, except with a current chassis. They are about 80 grand with powertrain.

I have a very deep respect for American Muscle, especially the Shelby Cobra 427 - they are very beautiful machines ;-)

Re: My G35 vs. Shelby cobra 427

"Real" replicas are available. That is to say replicas made by Shelby America, so I guess they are not technically replicas then? I dunno. But they are available in various custom chassis including bodies made from all fiberglass carbon fiber to aluminum. I actually checked one out last year the 4000 series with a fiberglass body (the cheapest skin available) went for $47k without an engine. If you were to get the 427 s/c I think that it was an additional $21k. Definitely not a daily driver. lol

Check it out at www.shelbyamerican.com

Re: My G35 vs. Shelby cobra 427

One of my friends from school out in Cali just got a 1967 Shelby GT500, otherwise known as 'Eleanor'

Apparently Ford made like 100 of them and sold them at auction, lucky for him his father has craploads of money to spend so he got it. I think it was a small step up from his "old" Denali on 22's...

Boy that brings back a few memories. I had a '68 Shelby GT500 White Convert.
Not quite as rare as 'Eleanor' , but nice just the same.
I wish I still had it!!!
