3rd Gear engagement problem

Read countless threads on here but, I have yet to see anyone on here with this exact problem. I have a heck of a time when I'm in 2nd gear and trying to rapidly engage in 3rd gear. This doesn't happen all of the time but, it has hapenned at least six times since I bought the car. It seem like any other gear cahnge at high speeds it's no problem. Except for 3rd gear. Last week I wasn't looking down at it and I stupidly wound up shifting into 1st gear. Immediatelt upon noticing my mistake, I corrected it. Is this at all a common problem, or unique to my transmission? The car has 22k and I bought it with 5,600 miles so, and I rarely ever hammer it. Therefore, it's not a car that has ever been beat up on the track or elsewhere.

Getting engaged issue....=)

From your description it sounds like the 3rd gear syncros but it only happens when you powershift from second to third....right? It's not something that occurs all the time so getting Infiniti to replace your trans probably won't happen. If I were in your situation I'd have the tranny drained and replace the fluids with RED LINE synthetic trans fluid. (check for the correct weight) This will make the trans work better overall and might cure the third gear issue....

Thanks, I was thinking abut taking it in to my mechanic to get a couple of things done before inspection sticker time. I'll just add this to the list.

Sounds like it could be driver error. When going into third, just push straight up and the stick will know where to go. If you try to push it over to the right, there’s a good chance you will miss third and grind near fifth,

Also, not sure about others experiences, but at least with my JWT clutch and flywheel, I’ve had a bad experience with other fluid than oem. My Nissan mechanic put in fluid that he swore they put into all of the manual Z trannys and it did not play nice with my JWT. Went back to oem and everything was perfect.

Thumbs up

I really hope it is driver error. Its weird cause it only doesnt want to go in third gear. Every other gear is fine. Anyway, I just got the car at texas auto direct a few weeks ago with 60k miles. I doubt neither them or the previous owner changed the trans fluid so i will start there and see if it helps. Btw, thanks for the reply. I know this was an old thread so it was good to see you are still active

Depending on mileage and exactly which revision of the tranny you have it could just be worn synchros as well. Not changing the fluid ever just accelerates the wear.
