hi guys, as some of you know I'm looking at buying my 1st G35 coupe and looking at used vehicles (2003 to 2004 range) so granted most of them are above 50,000 miles, but some are quite low, like in the 30's and for a 5 to 6 year old car, I don't know how much to believe it. ![Icon43](https://g35driver.com/forums/images/smilies/icon43.gif)
How easy is odometer tampering on these vehicles???
does the cluster just need to be switch out??
Is there a tamper light like my BMW and most Mercedes Benz have??
Is mileage reading stored somewhere other than the odometer cluster??
I tried doing a search, but I came up empty, maybe I used the wrong words, or I don't know
Thanks
Steven

well, anythings possible even on the bimmers and benzs but alot of people really dont use there G as a DD so i would say you are safe now if an 03 come up with 2k miles then i might be a lil leary! Honestly my G will not see 50k anytime soon cause i only pull it out on wknds and long trips < 4hrs!

There's several ways to check the mileage on a G you're interested in buying. Go the the dealership with the vin number and ask to see the service records. Once they're recorded on a service form it's impossible to change them. I'm a good example, I just turned 25K miles on my '04....not that unusual.

My '04 G35 Coupe has only 31K miles on it... a lot of the Coupes out there have low miles because people who live in a cold weather environment often don't drive them in the winter. I only drive mine in the Spring, Summer and Fall and only if it's nice out(no rain or threats of rain or hail).
The odometer reading is stored in the ECU. It can be changed or even rolled back, but it would need to be done by someone with a tool and/or software to connect to the ECU(OBD-II) and knowledge of how to hack the ECU. There are a bunch of various programs that are designed to be installed on a PC or laptop which allow you to connect the computer your car for reprogramming sections of the ECU. The commercially available versions of these software don't provide mechanisms for changing the odometer readings, but any halfway respectable computer programmer could easily figure out how to modify the value in the ECU if he had the motivation to do so.
I personally think it would be a fun thing to hack just for the sake of a challenge since I'm a Software Engineer, but it's illegal and I also wouldn't ever do it on my car. It would be fun to take a wrecked G35 in a junkyard and try to see how easy it is to reset the odometer though.

how many people check/investigate the mi/km when purchasing a vehicle?
And HOW do u go about to see if it's been "rolled back"?
Yes dealership history is a good idea but I think alot of drivers perform routine service themselves no? (Since my 03 warranty expired I do all the service myself)
