Quick question in regards to machining a flywheel.

2005 G35 Coupe.

Dealership tried to make me replace both the clutch and the flywheel.
Charged me 2500. :*(
Dealership said it was impossible to machine the flywheel.

The local mechanic said he could machine the flywheel and replace the clutch for a lotttt less.

Is this possible/safe?

Thanks!

Does your mechanic know the flywheel is a dual mass flywheel? Those cannot be machined by most shops

He seemed pretty confident. Hes warrantying the work and ****.
I told him that the dealership said it wasn't possible, but he said he could do it and that the dealer was just trying to hustle meee.

I replaced both clutch and flywheel with JWT setup when I had new motor put in at 60k. Got the old clutch and flywheel back and neither were in terrible shape. If i had to again i would have broken the small bit of glaze on the flywheel and installed stage one clutch on it.

I wouldn't. I have the JWT FW and stage 2 clutch, very happy with it. There is no "chatter" except at very low idle and not audible unless you're outside the car. More than an acceptable trade-off for the rev-happy nature of the car now. Since I flashed with COBB AP and can spin my old DE to 7400 rpm now, it is very quick to do so, and very smooth.

The clutch has been fantastic and without any issue, I have 35k on it which is more than the OEM clutch lasted.

$2500 for a clutch job? Jesus F'ing Christ.... don't even consider doing that at a dealership. Once your car is out of warranty, there is no job that you should have done at the dealer that can be done at a local mechanic shop or by yourself.

That's utterly obnoxious. Have your mechanic friend do it and put in an aftermarket clutch and flywheel..... I bet when it's all said and done, parts + labor will cost you about $1200-1300.

Make sure if you want to go to switch to a single mass flywheel such as the JWT you try and find someone local to listen to and sit in first. Many find the sound unacceptable

A big plus one here as you should not atempt to machine a dual mass flywheel....just replace it.

That's unfortunate and surprising, ACT usually makes very nice stuff. It may improve some as things break in.

The JWT is not audible when shifting the car in motion, only when I am stopped at idle. If graveyard quiet is important to people at idle, get the $1200 replacement dual mass, or better yet maybe an M35 with AT and cushy ride, too.

Chatter is a really personal thing, it's hard to go by "good" or "bad" from one person to another, but you will have some, no doubt. To date however the only person I've actually heard from who HATED their JWT found out it was not installed correctly and improved significantly once it was. It's a well made unit.

Out of curiosity, what could go wrong with machining a dual mass flywheel?
