Question Do I need an alignment? Laser Test results attached!

Just wondering how important it is for me to get an alignment. I got a free test done by one of the shops. Attached is the file. Thanks in advance for any help.

You can see the file here: http://i43.tinypic.com/2nqgxt3.jpg

You need an alignment.

Front toe in at +1.0 deg. L/ -1.2 deg. R is way off FSM nominal specs of 0.08 deg.

This will eat up your tire tread if the compound is soft and will cause cupping if the compound is harder.

Front right negative camber is fairly high at -1.0 degree (-0.5 is nominal). Since front camber is non-adjustable it could be the beginnings of a bad bushing on a compression rod (or even a bent compression rod as my G recently suffered).

Your rear camber, especially R, is too negative (min -1.75 deg, nominal -1.25), you want to get that negative camber as close to nominal as possible to avoid feathering tires as well.

Rear L toe-in is too high (nominal is -1.1 deg.)

Alignments are very important if you slightly care about your car, or spending money on tires.

I get an alignment twice a year. Well worth the 70 bucks.

Thanks a lot for the help.

Any particlar shops you guys would recommend? Brake masters? Good year? Dealer is asking $140 and nissan is about $90. Other shops like midas ask 55.

And if it makes any difference I have 5mm on my rear tires left and about 6mm on the fronts.

Any shop that calibrates its equipment on a fairly frequent basis.

Ask the dealer for a discount. It cannot hurt. They often post service discounts on their websites. If a doctor or lawyer can negotiate their rates a mechanic certainly should be able to if they want business.

Body restoration shops tend to calibrate fairly frequently.

Nationally known tire shops may be more up on specific issues of wear with certain tires on certain cars. Many such as Just Tires (Goodyear) provide a 6 month/ 6K mile alignment warranty. You can ask any of these shops for their internal labor coupons as well.

No matter where you go watch to see how carefully they set up for each alignment.

Show the tech a copy of the FSM which you will find in this .pdf attachment. Alignment specs are in Chapter A in the Quick Reference Chart.

Infinti_G35_2004_FSM.pdf

Sounds like your tread depth is at 6/32". Most new tires start out with 10/32" tread depth. 2/32" of an inch of tread depth (measured at the tread wear bars) is the tail end of serviceable life of the tire.

Normal tread wear will simply increase with mileage. Abnormal or irregular tread wear can result from improper inflation, mis-alignment, bent or worn suspension parts (which can usually be discerned in an alignment) or a plain damaged/ defective tire.

If an alignment is off specs the first wear and tear item that will be affected is that which connects the car to the pavement - you guessed it the tires.

Rotating tires seems to have less an impact on tire wear when it comes to modern tires. Many vehicle manufacturers, such as Volvo and BMW advise against tire rotation. The logic is that once a tire has worn irregularly simply moving it to another position of the car is not going to "fix" the tire. On the G35 coupe, of course, rotation is not possible with assymetric tires (as most performance tires are). That is why tire defect warranties are subject to the vehicle manufacturer's rotation recommendations.

When it comes to high performance tires IT IS important to balance wheel/tire assemblies at least once a year. Out of balance wheel/ tires are also more prone to irregular wear.

Thanks a lot for the helpful information! I already had my tires balanced and will most likely go over to good year to get the alignment. I think they said they would give me a one year warranty and they charge about $60. Thanks again for all the info.

for alignment, i went to firestone and got the lifetime alignment for 169 bucks.

also, i think its pretty common for the right side of the car to be more off for dropped cars right? i got an alignment and my left side is in alignment but the right side isnt.

what are possible causes of this?
