floor jack

I'm looking to buy a floor jack. Anybody have any recommendation for a low profile jack that would fit underneath the car to jack up the front center point? Or should I jack up the side first and then use a high profile jack to raise the center point?

Costco has two high quality low profile jacks for less than $100 each. I have an Arcan aluminum 2 ton floor jack and I love it.

I have a craftsman. I drive my car up on a couple of 2x6's and have no problems with my jack.

I prefer using my Rhino Ramps - but depends on what needs to be done.

get the U.S. General from harbor freight. It is low profile (3'') and super light (25 lbs.) some even come with l.e.d lights for easy sight of jacking points, compact enough to bring to race events, etc. I cut a "V" notch in some old skateboard wheels to use as a cushion to protect the jacking points, this is a great set up.

Here's some very good advice, you want the lowest profile jack you can find just in case you go nuts like the rest of us and get sides and lower your G. My Sears standard 3 ton jack is worthless without my rollups....

I would recommend not getting the Craftsman low profile sport jack(silver with red).... a good friend of mine has one that he uses for his lowered Camaro. The Jack started leaking pressure like crazy after about a year, and now you can only use it just to lift the car up long enough to put jack stands under it.

Isn't it kinda lame to use a jack that doesn't hold it's pressure? Have your bud take it back to Sears for a replacement or to get the seals replaced. I've been using the same Sears Craftsman jack for 20 years and it's never let me down. (literally)

Craftsman tools in general were a lot better quality many years ago.... back when they gave you lifetime warranties on most of the stuff that they made.

The new jacks are only good for a 1 year warranty. Go read the reviews on their site of their modern low-profile aluminum jacks... basically 4 out of every 5 reviews is of unhappy customers who have had the jacks break or start leaking after a 5 or 6 uses... many just at around a year after buying them.

If you're going to get one of those lower-end modern floor jacks from Craftsman, make sure you pick one that looks like it is easy to take apart and replace seals and other parts on. It's only a matter of time until the jack will need to be serviced.

Thank you all for your replies. It looks like I have to use a ramp, 2x4, or second (OEM jack) prior to using the floor jack at the front center jack point. So I guess any reasonable low profile jack would do. I would probably invest in aluminum one.

I drive front up on 2x6's first (ride lowered).

Have a low profile 'Torin' -big red- they call it. Yup seals leak on that one too (right after warranty expires). Got it at Pep Boys. POS but holds long enough to get stands underneath.

My short low profile jack will go under front for center jack point, but then have no pump travel with handle so I just jack from sides for stands.
