Sales Tax on used cars?
Hi, I've never bought a used car before. Do you pay sales tax when you buy from a private party seller? I'm trying to see how much $$ I could save by buying a used one vs. new. Thanks!

Re: Sales Tax on used cars?
Depends on where you live. Here in Illinois, the sales tax on a used car depends on its age and value. The maximum amount is $1500 (compared to 7.75% of the selling price for a new car).
Re: Sales Tax on used cars?
An individual to individual sale does not require paying sales tax to the seller. When you register it with your county, they may charge property tax. Many cars are advertised from what appears to be an individual. But the seller is using their company and thus charge sales tax(and sometimes don't report it but pocket the change). All dealers charge sales tax whether it's new or used.

Bought mine used and paid the taxes at the licence branch when I got the plates.
