Tranny Question 6MT - Help

Guys,

I have 04 6MT... When I pulled it into garage and had windows open I noticed that when I let clutch out (out of gear of course) I hear a kinda gear meshing noise. When I put clutch in it goes away. I know you should hear some noise difference but was wonder how much noise is normal. I guess I never noticed it much cause usually I have the windows up cause Air was on.

Also do any of you get a noise when shutting off engine (rattle noise / marbles) for a about a second if you turn off car with clutch in.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Tranny Question 6MT - Help

When you park the car, you really should leave it in gear (either first or reverse), as well as use the parking brake. I know many of you don't do this, but leaving it in gear, whether on a hill or on the flat, is like leaving an automatic transmission in park. You immobilize (lock) the rear wheels.

Shoulds like the usual chatter box!

Anyone know if this sound will go away if you change the clutch to like the nismo one or whatever?

An aftermarket performance clutch like the Nismo, JIC or Exedy will be noisier than the oem clutch. I have an Exedy carbon racing clutch/ pressure plate and flywheel, and it's definitely noisier than stock, but it performs better and can handle much more hp/ torque.

Re: Tranny Question 6MT - Help

Ahh I just posted this question in the Tech forum, I guess this is the same thing I'm hearing.

So this noise is just something we have to "deal" with, or is generaly accepted?

Hmm...

Re: Tranny Question 6MT - Help

It would seem many of us have the same issue. I have a new 04. Went to dealer last night and started up another 6MT 04 (had 1 mile on it) and guess what... same noise when turning off with clutch out and also same noise when at idle in neutral with clutch out. I am guessing now this is normal noise and gets somewhat louder as car breaks in. Does anyone know if it is the throw out bearing this is noisey or the gears in tranny? Will noise get less as time goes on or worse?

Re: Tranny Question 6MT - Help

We have very vocal clutch bearings and tranny components. My tranny and clutch are loud in a closed garage space, and sure, when you disengage the clutch the noise is reduced considerably. Never had a problem after a year and a half the noise has not gotten any worse. You can actually hear the enagement position of the clutch when you enagage or disengage even in neutral.

Re: Tranny Question 6MT - Help

Many thanks to all for input.... I called consumer affairs which then got a call from a "manager" from consumer affairs who actually owned a 03 6MT and has the same noises from tranny/clutch!!!! He called some "technical" people he knew and they confirmed that noise is totally normal and you will hear it more in enclosed enviorment. Noise should not get any louder over years of driving. They said that due to the high level of performance parts and engr the tranny makes this noise. They know about it and they said it is perffectly normal. Same on 350Z. They said with Air off and radio off you can hear it in car somewhat. They said no plans to change tranny to make it quieter. Performance vs. quiet... I dunno which is better... i tend to lean for performance since I bought a performance car.... but that said I don't want it to loud.
