Has this happened to anyone else?

One day I went to fill up, pushed on the gas door, and nothing happened... I made sure the doors were unlocked and everything was as it should be, but it would still not pop open when I pushed on it. I CAREFULLY slid a credit card into the space and pried it open. The raised plastic piece of the gas door itself that rests (when closed) against the rubber mechanism that pops it open had been broken somehow. The mechanism that pops the door open (for lack of a better term) still works, but because that raised plastic piece has been broken off, I now have to use my credit car to open my gas door every time. It's embarrassing. Now, I either have to replace the entire gas door, or fabricate and install a piece of... something... to replace that missing piece of plastic so that it will open properly again. Has this BS happened to anyone else? If so, what did you do to fix it?

This happens when the little white locking mechanism gets gummy. I remember reading that you can open it from inside the trunk when it gets stuck (have to remove the trunk liner in that area). Any chance your credit card prying is what caused the tab to break? I wonder how a broken tab will keep it locked instead of let it open all the time. Take a picture so maybe we could offer suggestions on how to fix the broken tab.

The lil white plastic piece that stick out, broke off. The cap still opens though. I've got the piece in my ashtray in case it stops working later on.

No, the little white piece was already broken off when I bought the car. When you open the gas door, looking at the car, there is a round black ... thing. if you push it in, it stays compressed. Push it in again, and it sticks back out... that's what opens the gas door when you push on it. Anyway, on the gas door itself, right where that black thing meets it when its closed, the plastic is raised a bit, but hollow, and that is the part of my gas door that is broken... because of that, I cannot push the door in far enough to in turn make it push in the black thing enough to pop open the gas door. I know of A WAY to fix it, I was just checking to see if I am the only one with a broken gas door (not the white piece that locks it), and if anybody had a better idea to fix it than the one I came up with.

Got it, good description. Try some JB Weld epoxy putty (from any auto parts store). Or, in honor of Billy, go with some Mighty Putty! Should just be able to build up the area so it has enough to trigger the two state plunger thing when you press on the outside of the door.

Two-state plunger - much better than my description!!! Thanks Curt! That's kind-of what I was thinking. I am actually going to cut a piece of MDF and form it to JUST a little less than the right size/shape, then put a couple coats of fiberglass resin on it, sand it, epoxy it into place, and hit it with some touch up paint. Just feeling out to see if I was crazy or overlooking other possibilities.

I decided not to go through all that crap after all and I just cut a piece of masonite down to the right size/shape, sanded the edges smooth and painted it flat black.
