So I think I might be in trouble here. I have an 05 6mt coupe which I bought maybe a month ago now. I was driving to the gym yesterday afternoon, and my check engine light came on. My heart immediately sank. For some reason, I already knew that it had something to do with the oil. Sure enough, I can't even get a reading on the dipstick. So I turn around and buy 2 qts of oil, add one immediately, and drive home. This morning, I checked the oil level and after adding that first quart, it was just above the low marker. So I added 1/2- 2/3 of a quart and drop it off at my mechanic just now. I'm waiting for the call back to see what the problem is. So what do you guys think I should do? I'll post what my mechanic says as soon as I hear from him. I really hope I haven't ruined my engine as I don't think I'm under warranty (bought the car used, its an 05, 44,000 miles.)
UPDATE: It turns out the check engine light was an air/fuel problem. The code that came up was P1283 "air fuel sensor heated circuit bank 2 sensor 1." Anyone have any idea what this means? They cleared the codes, but when I turned it on to drive home the check engine light was right back on. I'm guessing it has something to do with the mods the previous owner installed. They include CAI, plenum, Z tube, high flow cats and underdrive pulleys. Could this combination be throwing something out of whack? I have noticed sometimes that the exhaust smells like its running rich. Any ideas on what I should do now???

take it to the dealership ASAP and tell them the engine is consuming oil. I hope you have receipts/records of previous oil changes, at least showing that you did it every 7500 miles max.
Oh my God, that sounds like the exact situation I was in with my 05. The only exception was that mine had lost all the oil, so I replaced 4 quarts to get it to show. I wouldnt worry too much about it. Its only 1 quart low so you may have just needed that quart. Or on the other hand, you car could have oil consumption issues, and they will tell you that you dont, because the only way to fail the oil consumption test is to basically pull the drain plug. But if you manage to fail the test like I did, and you go to a good dealership. You will drive a nice G35x loaner car around for 2 weeks, and have a brand new long block for free.

Indeed it is.
I don't have any records for it, but the previous owner did all the maintenance at Coconut Creek Infiniti, so hopefully the dealership near me can get it from them.

Yea, I had a great dealership. They didnt give me any hastle. They looked up the oil change records from the previous owner, and once I failed the OC test. I think it took close to a month for the new engine to come in, and install it. Now its been about 1000 miles on the breakin period of my new VQ with no problems. Definately sounds nicer, but I cant step on it or take it past 4k rpms. Thats like giving me a milk shake, and telling me to drink it through my nose.

Very True! And thats the way I look at it. Not that it needed one, but now it has a Brand new Revised engine. And as soon as my 1 year warrenty expires, I may be able to install the list of parts sitting in my bedroom. Thats also a bummer. I had bought about $1200 in engine mods for it before the old VQ took a crap on me. Now this stuff just takes up room on my floor.
d0ct0r, as long as you're under 70,000 miles then the dealer will take care of the engine. Don't add any more oil, you want them to be able to see that it's lacking oil and the ticking noise i am sure it's making. I bought my 05 6MT coupe in May from a dealer, and within 2 weeks i noticed the oil levels and remembered that the dealer had changed the oil before they sold it to me. So i took it back to do the Oil Consumption test, then not even a 1000 miles later (900 miles) i had no oil in registering. So i took it back, 3 days later they gave me a brand new motor in my car
it does sound smoother. and they didn't give me any hassle about my aftermarket intake, headers, plenum spacer, or pulleys on the car.

I remember reading that some high-flow cats caused the check engine light to trigger for some. Maybe someone with more experience can chime in on this or perhaps search on the board for HFC related issues?
