Been hit... glad to be alive
Been hit... glad to be alive
Hi everyone,
So I was parked in front of my place on the street when this guy hits my door with his car as he's driving by. Don't get me wrong, I'm pissed. But more so glad that I'm actually alive. When this happened, I was standing in between my car and the door itself gathering my stuff from the back seat. It's not like I just swung my door open either. I must have been standing there for a couple of minutes. And man, his car was close.
What I don't get is this, the road is a WIDE 2 lane road with enough space for parking on both sides and even public buses to drive by without getting close to parked cars. Each lane, not including cars parked along the curb probably measures over 10 feet! Why this guy was so far to the right still blows my mind away.
Any ideas on how much this will cost? I got the guy's insurance and all that stuff, but don't want to get shafted on repairs. I plan on taking the car to a fairly decent place that has worked on my car before. They did fantastic work.
Just some things to note:
* The majority of the damage is on the door skin.
* However, the basic frame structure of the door is also bent on the outer most bottom corner. You can see the bends and ripples from the door edge.
* I'm hoping there isn't any hinge damage and the door swings open ok, but hard to tell.
* The window rolls up/down, but the track on the inside must be bent or something as the window wobbles pretty freely when the door is open.
I'll try to post pics later after talking to my insurance company.

Doubt there's frame damage. He never made contact to the body of the car, just the door. There could quite possibly be hinge damage and most likely structural damage to the door itself.
Oh, maybe this might clear things up a little since I haven't posted pics yet. He didn't broadside my car. I was parallel parked and he was driving by when he struck my open door. Still can't figure out why he was about 4 feet too far to the right. I was parked further to the right than the truck in front of me. If I weren't there, he probably would have clipped the rear bumper or fender of that truck instead.
Foot and a half even more to the right than that, and that's where I was standing.

eek that sucks. ive been bringing my car to my uncles bodyshop down in san mateo for the past 3 years and they always been doing great jobs on my cars. i just started working there last week as a summer job while i have no school. i can create an estimate when i can see pictures and let you know.
Surface pics. I couldn't really get good pictures of the bends and ripples along the inner edge of the door.

Hard to tell, but there's about a 1/4 inch gap now between the glass and the rubber molding.

Yes, that's my G parked there. And that's where it was when the guy hit it. And that's really how wide the road is. No special lens on my camera or anything.

Wow, that is scary! You were inches away from getting hit, just inches! I'm surprised you didn't notice that this guy was high or drunk, driving that close to other cars is just nuckingfuts. They should replace the whole door, make sure they do a good job matching the paint....some shops never get it right....Glad you survived this incident and weren't injured....
