6MT OWNERS NEED YOUR HELP ASAP

So I have my car in for service because its griding hard from 4th to 6th and sometimes from 5th to 6th. Dealer calls and says Inf tech in California told him the car isn't designed to skip gears and this griding can be expected if done so. What kind of BS is that? I have had 4 stick cars in my life (all MSRP under $20K) that NEVER had this problem. Plus, the dealer says they cant get it to grind from 5th to 6th, how convienent. So now I have a case file going with consumer affairs on this ****. Have any of your heard of this excuse before? Now I'm just supposed to live with the fact its been grinding for 3 months and forget about it? This might be my first and last Inf purchase!

Doesn't sound right to me!!! I had a 2 door Explorer with a 5 speed and beat the crap out of it. Skipped gears, which I don't think would harm the gear box, as long as you enter whatever gear you are going into properly. My first clutch lasted me about 130K and I drove it hard. I had the tranny rebuilt then too so save on labor since I didn't expect it to last forever.
I would try a different dealer if you can. If that works, call the Infiniti Direct line and issue a complaint against the original dealer. This will get the dealers panties in a bunch! Supposedly Infiniti service is second to none! I have had a few minor issues myself, but so far, they have been responsive....somewhat. This was my first new car so I can't really compare all that much.

I've heard that skipping gears *can* be bad for your transmission, and that it causes damage to your synchros, and since we all know how absolutley wonderful the G35's synchros are, I could almost say yeah they could very well be right. Don't take this as an attack on your driving skills, but skipping gears means that your either riding a lower gear to high or a higher gear to low, and this could lead to premature synchro wear. Then again, I could be completely wrong =)

Re: 6MT OWNERS NEED YOUR HELP ASAP

Why do people skip gears? Is it just cause they don't feel like shifting through each gear to get into 6th for cruising...I personally always go through each gear even if I'm only in for 2 seconds and then up to the next one...I'm not trying to say this is your fault, I've just always wondered why people even do this...Goodluck though with that dealership, just keep raising hell and you should be fine...

Sounds like total BS to me......
As long as you are not over reving or lugging the car...
there should be no problem skipping gears. I have been doing it for 30 + yrs in BMW's and Porsches.
Around town in the G, I only need 1, 3 & 5th most of the time.

i skip gears all the time and my car is fine...the car before my g, a 94 se-r was the same...i would rev high just to push it alittle and then just skip a gear to drop the rpms down to a lower range. i never thought that skipping could be bad

Re: 6MT OWNERS NEED YOUR HELP ASAP

My coupe is an 03 model 12/02 production date. I skip shift occassionally and have not had a problem engaging syncs. Usually I skip 4th and go to 5th around town or jump into 6th on highway approaches.

Re: 6MT OWNERS NEED YOUR HELP ASAP

Why you would skip gears: Theres a *** 3 series next to you about to get on a merging onramp. You drop the clutch at 2000rpm. Punch it to thru first, second. then finally third. You're approaching 80 mph with the 3 in your mirrors. Good game. Let the rpms drop from 6000 to about 3000 or so and slap that thing in 6th and move on. Why would you put it into 4th and keep your engine at high rpms?

Re: 6MT OWNERS NEED YOUR HELP ASAP

Well my experience was grinding in third when downshifting, they didn't hesitate to replace the transmission. Try another dealership
