Re: synth at first oil change?
You can switch at the first oil change if you've got over 3k on your engine. You don't want to switch to synthetic until your engine has been broken in.

Re: synth at first oil change?
based on numerous posts here as well as the maxima forums and bobistheoilguy, it is well documented that our engines (VQ35) do not completely break in until after 10,000-12,000 miles.
does it hurt to change to synthetic early? My oil analysis showed no excessive signs of silicone, which is an indication that the seals are still seating themselves and the engine has not fully broken in. So it didn't hurt my engine. i changed to mobil synthetic at 3,800 miles.
others such as chinee showed high levels of silicon in their oil analysis.
others will argue that other cars such as the corvette come from the factory with synthetic.
I say do what makes you most comfortable. If i had to do it again, I would probably have stayed with dino until my 11,250 oil change.
some good dino oils i've seen is castrol gtx. and yes, mobil 1 does make dino oil.
hope this helps
