My buddy says you should change the oil adn filter on the G within the first 1000 miles....due to the "new" engine breaking in! Also due to the micro shavings that the engine has produced since you are wearing it in.....Any thoughts?

 

Ask him why no new car company recommends it.

No worries on the first change. Just follow the manufacturer's schedule.

I do my own oil changes and check the oil after for debris/shavings etc, and I've never seen much from the VQ engine. Even after the first change.

Do modern day engines have metal wearing on metal? It's the piston rings. Everything else rests on a thin layer of oil.

 

its been debated few times on this forum...it depends on who you talk to, friend of mine who been building his own engine for last 25 years and have been work at GM's motor factory, since 70's, he told me that, he usually do first oil change very very early, around 500 miles, and base on his view? i did my first oil change at 650 miles...if for nothing else, just for a peace of mind...wont hurt.

I changed mine at 1300 and had a couple of metal shavings so I was glad. Plus it felt like 10 extra hosepower!!! hehe

well, you can go by what friends say... or what blackstone oil analysis says about it, and on a G35, not just 'cars in general'.. somebody already sent a sample of their oil at 1000 miles. Blackstone said was consistent with oil with closer to 3000 miles on it. Its here, search for it. Decide for yourself.

There is 'good wear' to almost 5K, so I'm not claiming its better or worse to change early. You can weigh those considerations for yourself.
