Re: For those with 5 AT!

Are you downshifting in manumatic? If you are the RPM's may be too high. If not it's not normal. Sounds like a warrantee issue. You may also want to look into Gordo's grounding gear. There's a huge thread on it in the FAQ & DIY section. Get the 7 wire kit. I didn't have a problem with rough downshifts but I noticed it makes it smoother and more responsive.

Hehe, I use the snot out of my MM. I think the "rough" that you describe, is only when it downshifts from 2nd to 1st, and even that isn't always that rough. It is normal though.

Re: For those with 5 AT!

do u guys upshift at 6500, when i do the needle would bounce because of the rev limiter and would feel very rough. i noticed that there is like a .5 sec shift delay. now i shift at around 5900 and its perfect

Re: For those with 5 AT!

yea that clunk downshifting is normal. it is only obvious downshifting from 2nd to 1st. 3rd to 2nd is a pretty light clunk too. My upshifting is smooth as butter though. Sometimes i may feel a SLIGHT clunk upshifting, but only when i do so at low rpm's. and yes i experience a shift delay too. .5 sec seems about right. I do so about 6100 rpm and the delay isnt that timely that it exceeds redline though.

Re: For those with 5 AT!

A lot of people have reported rough downshifting, especially with the 2 --> 1 shift. I personally have never noticed it though (2004 5AT with 5000 miles). Once in a great while I'll have a rough shift if I happen to lift off the accelerator just as the shift takes place.

Re: For those with 5 AT!

i have gotten that feeling too when going from 2nd to 1st. what i do when i need to stop is get down to 3rd and use a little of the brake, then when its down to about 1k i shift to 2nd..that usually takes the "clunk" out of the shifting. i never go from 2nd to 1st as it was always very loud and it just doesnt seem good for the car. once you slow down enough, almost down to a stop, the car will go to 1st for you without any harsh sounds..

something else i noticed and i hope its normal....after getting in my car, usually in the morning, and shifting from park to reverse, theres sometimes a very violent feeling to it. i don't know what it is. i hope its nothing major cause that would really suck...only about 2000 miles on the coupe and i dont feel like having problems already.

Kytran,
You upshift at 6500 rpm? Holy $hit! And, I think when I upshift at (manumatic) 5000, I'm punching it too hard! Guess not...

Re: For those with 5 AT!

Hey omar,
try "blipping" the throttle immediately after your downshift. With the half second delay you can match your rpm's to make the downshift smoother, but your timing is the key. It also means on more aggresive downshifts ( higher rpm's ) you'll have to break with your left foot which for me is the hardest part. I've done this technique on the street but I think on a track this would be alot easier to practice and perfect. I guess this is the 5AT version of heel/toe shifting.

Don't Worry, I have the same thing too. I've done numerous searches and it seems normal. Our trannies are supposedly pretty tough and we have a LONG warranty =)

I also have 2400 miles on my coupe.

Re: For those with 5 AT!

yea the "violent reverse" happens to me everyday. When i start my baby up in the morning, I let it warm up for a good 3-4 min. Then i put it in reverse, and u can hear the car switch gears with a BIG clunk. I guess its just normal, as it even does it after i warm up my car everyday. my dad has a qx56 and when he hauls that thing in reverse, its such a loud sound from the tranny. My G almost sounds as loud....

but i dont care. my warranty is my best friend.

Re: For those with 5 AT!

A 3-4 minute warm up is not enough to get the coolant and ATF to 180F where the idle rpm normalizes...........obviously a slamming shift into reverse.
