Long Term Nav Question
Long Term Nav Question
For those of you that have had Nav in your car for a while do you use it or is it more just fun to play with. It really doesnt matter cause the order is already placed w/ nav but just wondering if it's easy enough to use that it gets used, if you know what I mean. Basically, is it worth it??
Re: Long Term Nav Question
Copied my posting on the subject from another board:
-----------
I was originally against getting this, but after weighing people's arguments and actually getting lost after placing my order without (I didn't have time to print out a map), I went back and added it to my order.
Most of the time I have the nav monitor down/off, however, it did come in handy several times.
1. Got lost in a dark, not-so-great part of a city and I needed to find the nearest freeway onramp quickly.
2. Needed to find a club in San Francisco. Yes, it even knows which streets are one way.
3. Needed to find a friend's apartment.
There are plenty of other instances where I didn't punch in an address, but I had it up for visual guidance. And one great thing about it is that it has voice guidance, so you don't even have to really look at it much. For example, it'll say "right turn ahead, and then left turn in 1/10 mile".
Also, this is the first car that I really go out and drive, just for the heck of it. The nav system has helped me explore areas I've never been to before. And you can store your home address in it, so if you find yourself sick of exploring and don't know where you are, you can just tell it to find the quickest way home.
You may not think that it's a real handy feature now, but how long are you planning on keeping the car? A lot can change in five year's time (assuming that's your term). If you are firmly planted in one area for that duration, then maybe it's not for you. I don't own a house, and I doubt I'll be living in the same area for that long. The navigation system turned out to be a great buy for me.
-----------
One bad point about the system: It's a little slow in auto re-routing. If you're in a position where you need to make a quick decision -- while it's still calculating the new route -- and take the wrong route, it'll have to go back and recalculate. That can be a little frustrating.

Re: Long Term Nav Question
I did not really want it- but the available incoming cars all had it. Don't use it very frequently, but it is handy when you need it and works well. Recently discovered the business and restaurant listings, etc. This thing would be great for my wife- but it's MY car! (maybe I'll get her an aftermarket one for hers. I am curious about the frequency and costs of updates - anyone know?

Re: Long Term Nav Question
Can't tell you if it's worth $2000, that's between you and your wallet. I can say, however, that I use it pretty constantly, and would definitely miss it if I didn't have it in my next car. It allows quite a bit of spontaneity, since you can look up anything on the fly (restaurants, cinemas, bowling alleys, etc), and even in those situations where you'd download something off mapquest ahead of time, it makes the experience much more pleasureable by not making you risk accidents while reading directions or even pay attention to road signs. Just floor it and concentrate on traffic. Your G will tell you when it's time to turn.
It is utterly impossible to get lost. None of that "should I drive another mile in this direction or turn around now" dilemma. The other day I saw a commercial for a restaurant in a town 15 miles away that was making me hungry. I just wrote down the address and drove there directly.
The benefits seem two-fold: 1. gives you more reasons/excuses to go drive your G immediately, and 2. lets you concentrate your senses on enjoying your G without paying the slightest bit of attention to where you're going.
That said, I think it's only worth it for the sorts of people who live near large cities or like to take exploratory driving trips. If you live in the burbs and know every damn place by heart, and don't feel the urge to leave your zone, you don't need it. You can use mapquest for those rare occassions you take trips. But again, it's not the big roadtrips that make it valuable, it's the short little trips that you never thought of doing before just because it's too much trouble to figure out where you're going first. That make sense? Around the Boston sprawl and the seacoast of New England, with the contorted road system, it's great (although it has no clue around the Big Dig). Around, say, one of those isolated cities in western Canada, I would guess it's not as rewarding since most of the interesting stuff is concentrated in one spot and the roads are set up more sensibly. But I could be wrong, I've never driven around there.

Not to mention, let's see you're out. You're hungry. You think, "I sure could go for some Mexican food right now, I wonder what's in the area." MapQuest isn't going to help much with that one, the Nav system, however, can locate nearby mexican food restaurants, among other things.

Re: Long Term Nav Question
I use it almost every time I go out. For mapping, for gas mileage, for fun. It really makes driving interesting and fun.
Enjoy when it arrives bro........

Re: Long Term Nav Question
Definitely worth it IMO. All the reasons stated above plus some. It makes you aware of roads around you that you pass everyday, but never knew the names. Even if I don't put in a destination, it's cool to see your surroundings on a map at all times. I have mine set to show icons for surrounding gas stations & ATMs as well.
If you can afford it, get it - you won't regret it. It certainly can't hurt your resale value neither...
