Major Oil Burnoff!!!

Does anyone else get an insane amount of oil burnoff? I just changed my oil today after about 5k with mobil1 and there was less than 1 quart left in the pan. The dealer was the lastone to change my oil and I gave them some mobil 1 to fill it with. I immediately freaked out and I made an appointment first thing tomorrow to have them look at it to make sure there isnt any major wear on the internals. But I was just talking to a friend of mine with a 3.5 altima (same engine) and last time the dealer changed his oil he only had 2 quarts left and they told him that sometimes these engines burn a lot of oil. He lives in a totally different state and goes to a different dealer, so I dont know what to think. I am pretty sure that if I was driving around for awhile with that little bit of oil my engine got about 30k worth of wear in about 5k. Im gonna try and get an engine swap if it turns out to be bad. Wish me luck!

Re: Major Oil Burnoff!!!

that sure is a lot of oil....

during one of my previous oil changes, i got about 3.5 quarts out. this was after 3750 mi on the oil.

Since then, I've always made it a point to check my oil at least every thousand miles. so far, i've added 1 quart of oil and driven my car almost 4000 miles (including 9 runs at LACR). right now the oil level is right smack in the middle of "L" and "H". i'm also running mobil 1 5W-30

check your oil level more often.

Re: Major Oil Burnoff!!!

Funny this post came up, I just checked my oil today and its slightly above the halfway mark, and this is about 1400 miles in from the last change. I too have been filling up with Mobil 1 every 4500 miles. Whats the deal with this stuff?!

Re: Major Oil Burnoff!!!

Last week, with about 5,700 miles on Moblie 1 oil I burned out all the oil in the car. I didn't realize it at the time. My service station told me I wasn't due for an oil change for 1,300 miles. The car made some noise on start up. Then it stopped. I thought something was loose under the car and the problem had resolved itself. I proceeded to take it on a 300 mile trek to Phili. By the time I got back the check engine oil light was on and the engine malfunction light was on. The dealer told me 1) I had burned the oil out because I mostly take short distance trips 2) Mobile 1 wasn't recommended for my car, and 3) I was using the wrong oil filter (NAPA). After an oil change he told me to drive the car it was fine but they would monitor it. Bull!

The average person (include mechanic for that matter) wouldn't exect all oil to burn out of their cars in this sort a period of time. My Service station said there is a problem with the car and put in writing that there was "a high likelihood of permanent engine damage." Infiniti customer service doesn't appear to be returning my calls. There were reports on my350z.com of engines being replaced due to oil use issues.

I'm not using Mobil 1 but....my 03 with 12K miles, is using virtually NO oil between changes.
I check it weekly.

Sounds like Mobile 1 isn't so good for the VQ. So far, the people that have engine trouble are using mobile one...if it walks like a duck...

Re: Major Oil Burnoff!!!

for the last few years, 1 qt per 3K was fairly common with VQ30 and VQ35s. This appears to be something entirely different and slightly disturbing.

I'm on M1 and I'm not comsuming any (11K miles total, 3500 ODIs). Keeping an eye on it tho.

Re: Major Oil Burnoff!!!

Of those M1 users who are burning excessive amounts of oil, it would be interesting to know at what point the switch to M1 was made.

Re: Major Oil Burnoff!!!

I noticed in the owners manual it says something like "infiniti recommends only using mineral-based oil"

I was going to switch to M1 eventually, but now I'm getting a little scared!

"K&N Drop In & Airbox Mod
Crawford Plenum (V4)"

We'll that alone should void your engine ring warranty, how are you going to prove that you didn't cause the rings to wear [not set correctly].

Infiniti will probably take pity on you, but hard ball may be just around the corner with air flow mods.

Re: Major Oil Burnoff!!!

The rings seat in the first 1500-2000 miles or so (break-in period). I changed to mobil 1 at 2000 miles and I am sure nobody changed their oil before the end of the break-in period. However, I just got back from Santa monica infiniti and their tech said that if you fill the oil too high, the oil will pass through the rings and keep burning off until it is empty. However, if you fill it just right you wont have this problem. That is a huge load of bull! Right now they are waiting to hear from infiniti to see if they will cover the cost of dropping my oil pan ($350!!!). I would rather they do it to see for themselves that my engine is more than likely damaged. I had the oil changed at a different infiniti dealership and the service manager said that mistakes like that come out of the dealerships pocket and he kind of hinted to me that it would be tough to get them to replace the engine. I am pissed and worried at the same time. I will be paying this car off for another 4 1/2 years, and the entire time I will be paying money for their mistake in the service dept.

I'll keep you all posted.

Re: Major Oil Burnoff!!!

I'm starting to worry I switched too early at 4500. Switching too early seems to be setting a pattern here. (as per the Maxima.org VQ35oil reports too)

Not sure what to do. May be going back to dino while my consumption and blackstone reports still look good.
