Wheel Well - Did I Do Right Thing

Last week I ran over a big stone (about 5 inches in width) dumped by a truck on the highway. I was able to avoid the front wheel hitting it but the rear hit it and it pop up and hit not only the inside of wheel well (that part was ok) but hit the lip (the once inch flat painted part). It took about a one inch of paint right off down to metal but did not damage the outside paint at all ( I was lucky in that respect) and did not dent any metal at all... was really lucky. I componded the spot and touched it up with factory touch up paint. I put three layers of paint on the spot. Here is the question... I went out and bought 3M product from Pep Boys that is normally for a door edge guard. It was the perfect width to stick to that lip on the wheel well so I clean both lips on the rear wheels and put the product on to protect it from future damage. It actually looks pretty good on. Was it ok to put it on? I dont think there is an issue with rusting is there??? I don't see any way for water to build up since it only covers the one inch lip and does not rap around at all. I know some SUV's have protection in this area so I thought it would be ok?

Any opinions?
