Downshifting with Auto(Manual Mode)

Is it ok to down shift and engine brake in the manual mode of auto transmission?

I wouldn't recommend it. Brakes are generally cheaper too replace than a transmission. Just my opinion.

The occasional downshift should be ok but i wouldn't engine break. It causes too much wear on the tranny. Don't forget, its still an "automatic"

I think he means using the engines revs to slow the car down as downshifting would def. reduce speed without actually hitting the bake pedal, still not recommended as a normal procedure
