Winter Tire and Wheel Setup

I have a couple of quick questions about a winter tire a wheel setup -

1. When do you install the winter tires, and when do you take them off? Oct - Feb?

2. Where can I store my original tires and wheels without ruining them? Can I store them in the basement or attic?

3. How do you store them? Do you lay them on their sides? Have them standing up? Hang them on something?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Winter Tire and Wheel Setup

Not sure about 2 and 3 but if I DID have a dedicated setup I'd be using them from Dec. 1 - Apr. 1. Usually don't get any bad weather until December around here in D.C. May want to say where you live as someone from around you can probably give their experiences.

Re: Winter Tire and Wheel Setup

Last winter I was able to put them on in december... of course I picked up the car dec 20th, so not much choice.

Took them off early to mid march. If it snows, screw it i'm just not gonna drive.

I lay them on the side so that the inside of the rim would almost touch the ground.. Cover in heavy duty plastic bag, and take out most of the air... I think you're supposed to do around half the amount of air.. I leave approx 20 psi in mine.

Basement should be fine for storage. Probably better for cooler atmosphere than hotter (basement cooler than attic) for tires, but I may be wrong.

Hope this helps

Re: Winter Tire and Wheel Setup

Thank guys. I live in NJ, and the winter is kind of unpredictable here, so I was thinking around Oct-Nov.
Yeah, I'm going to have separate wheels and tires for the winter so I'm just going to jack the car up and switch them out.
Laying them on their sides wont' mess up the tire sidewall, right?

Re: Winter Tire and Wheel Setup

nah won't hurt sidewalls... i mean, it's not spinning, so you're not putting friction onto the sidewalls.

And the weight of the rim+tire is nothing... just make sure you don't use the tire on it's side as a table for heavy stuff

Just be careful you don't scratch the finish of the rim.. other than that, no real concerns.

Re: Winter Tire and Wheel Setup

I live in central Jersey, and I will probably put on the winter set up mid Nov, depending on the weather at that time.....

I will store my 18" tires and rims in my garage, it will do them no harm.....I will clean and wax them prior to putting them away

I think you should be able to store them anyway you want....since they are not under and load conditions, I will store them flat with a pc of foam or rug to seperate each wheel.....

When I re-install them in late March/early April, I will be sure to check the tire pressure......

I see no reason to under inflate them when they are stored......

Re: Winter Tire and Wheel Setup

Thanks for the help guys. I'll make sure not to use them as a temporary table or anything like that.
So it looks like Nov-March will be a good time frame.

Thanks again!

Re: Winter Tire and Wheel Setup

I agree with mid-Nov..

As for the underinflating... tirerack said to. I can't find a link at the moment, but they definately said to underinflate a bit.

At worst, it'll take you a few extra minutes twice/year to fill it back up.

Re: Winter Tire and Wheel Setup

When ever the ambient temperature [in which you drive] drops below 45-50F is a good time since the rubber on Pilot Sports starts to harden. Summer Tires means Summer temperatures when using the tires.

Re: Winter Tire and Wheel Setup

Q45tech - So you would suggest a little bit before Nov, perhaps Oct, since the temps are usually around the 40F-50F temps around that time period.
How about underinflating the tires when they are in storage? Any info on that?

Thanks!

Re: Winter Tire and Wheel Setup

I have a couple of quick questions about a winter tire a wheel setup -

1. When do you install the winter tires, and when do you take them off? Oct - Feb?

My dedicated winter setup is on from Dec. 1 to April 1st.

2. Where can I store my original tires and wheels without ruining them? Can I store them in the basement or attic?

I stack mine in the garage. They also make good coffee tables.

3. How do you store them? Do you lay them on their sides? Have them standing up? Hang them on something

Hanging is a great option. Check out the garage stuff at www.griotsgarage.com

Re: Winter Tire and Wheel Setup

Winter tires are not meant to be used more than one winter.

Re: Winter Tire and Wheel Setup

Not entirely true. On average, you can get 15K miles or two seasons out of a set of dedicated snow tires. Even the Blizzak retains its multi-cell winter compound for 55% of its tread life which equates to about 15K miles on average. If you are throwing away winter tires every season, $ is being wasted.

Re: Winter Tire and Wheel Setup

I was under the impression you can only use them for 1 snowstorm before changing them...

Re: Winter Tire and Wheel Setup

Yeah if you drive the car 15K miles in one winter (and I don't know a lot of people who do) Snow tires have wear indicators just like regular tires do. Blizzaks have a snow platform as well that tells you when the multi cell compound has worn away. I had 3 seasons on my Blizzaks before replacing them. The Pirellis I had on the G last season are still virtually new on the front and only half or so worn on the rear.
