Re: Dealer Installing NEW engine

Toyota has a statement in owners manual that 1 quart per 1,000 miles is acceptable and warns owners that their warranty requires them to keep the oil full at all times.

Guess Nissan needs to add the same in bold flashing lights.

Just because old style heavy duty engines didn't burn much oil where is it written that newer high performance stretched engines don't need to burn some oil?

Re: Dealer Installing NEW engine

ULEV requires things of engine design that are not optimum for longevity or the way we use to think of longevity.

To me a well designed properly broken in and maintained engine lasts 300,000 miles and still uses little oil [a quart of synthetic at most between 90 day changes]. Unfortunately conventional oil are speced to evaporate 15% or so of their volume.

Once you try to get >73 HP per liter consumption goes up

What about the Mercedes (amg) engines and the Subaru plants making between 85 and 120hp/litre stock?

No general reports of marque-wide oil consumption problems there...

We'll just have to wait and see if it is 400 or 4,000 or 40,000......there must have been 300,000+ installed in various iterations [G,I, Fx, vans, pickups, altima to date. Whether it adds up to $10 per V6 sold or $100 or $1,000.

Re: Dealer Installing NEW engine

I'm sorry to bump this post up again but I am absolutely FURIOUS about this issue. I have had my car for 6 weeks and burned nearly 3 quarts of oil. This car is my baby and has been driven as such. There is NO REASON for consumption of this magnitude. I never beat on the car or even revved it high. I called the dealer yesterday and they told me it is NOT normal at all and to bring the car in ASAP so it's going in Friday. It will have exactly 3,750 on the odo when it pulls onto the lot.

The last thing I want performed on my BRAND NEW car is a huge engine overhaul. I guess my true fury comes from the fact that at best they will give me a new engine. This, in my eyes, is completely unacceptable. So I get the new engine and then what? The car is going to be completely worthless when I try to sell it. Who wants a car that has had the engine replaced? This reminds me of American cars with second or third engines... Jeeps, etc. Not Japanese cars. If the dealer does find that my car has a big enough issue to have the engine replaced I will likely lose my cool...

There is a DISTINCT difference between "topping off" and "adding 3 quarts" and that is an issue that will be brought up by me.

NOT HAPPY.

How are you guys measuring your oil? I mean, I check my dipstick its always full. Never had a issue after 16k of miles with oil consumption.

Re: Dealer Installing NEW engine

This is not accurate. Mainly because the oil filter can soak up over 3/4 of a quart and it won't release it back. So maybe you GUYS or some of you THINK your consuming oil, but really aren't.

Hmmm our Lexus is a Toyota, and it did not have this in the owners manual at all.

Re: Dealer Installing NEW engine

3qts - 3/4 qt = 2.25 qts unaccounted for.

The reason I checked my oil in the first place after about 1500 miles was because the feel of the car and the exhaust note were abnormal. I had a turbocharged car before the G and when it got low on oil or was coming close to a change interval it would start to drive funny because the turbo liked clean oil but to have the same type of symptoms on a brand new $39,000 naturally aspirated car after 1,500 miles is rediculous.

I tried to check my oil many times after driving it but so much splashes into the hole where the dipstick enters the engine that it's impossible to get an accurate reading so I have started checking first thing in the morning prior to starting and I get a very accurate read on the dipstick. The first time I checked it was after about 500 miles and it was just below the full mark (top end of the cross-etching) but after another 1000 it was well below the fill mark so I added a quart which brought it within the "ideal" zone. Then at 2500 miles i checked again and it was once again well below the cross-etching - subsequently added another quart bringing it within the zone again. Checked again 3 days ago and the friggin oil was low again! This is ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE.

Topping off is to be expected in most cars with "larger" engines and certainly in turbocharged cars (which many will debate because NO car should be burning through oil... period) but 3 quarts is WELL BEYOND topping off.

Re: Dealer Installing NEW engine

You would be surprise at how many 2002-2004 Q45 have had new engines for oil burning.........as to the G it appears they haven replaced even 1,000 engines yet out of 140,000 sold in 2+ years not counting Maxima, Altima and trucks.

I sure would want a new engine that didn't burn oil compared to an as built engine that did.

You could have bought a Ford everyone of the 2004/2005 4.6 and 5.4 has a problem with cylinder heads. They stopped production 3 weeks ago.

When you cost cut an engine to the bone, you have problems.

This might make you feel better:

Re: Dealer Installing NEW engine

That's pretty typical and is not very surprising from Ford. But from Infiniti? I just know how hard I worked to buy this car and now it's effed up in it's infancy. Is this a sign of things to come? I hope not.

Re: Dealer Installing NEW engine

i have 2002 toyota tundra V8 and the 1qt per 1K miles line is in the owners manual. but i have never consumed a drop of oil and actually haven't heard of any other owner of this v8 engine having a consumption problem either.

it seems to me that by now nissan would know exactly what the cause of a majority of the oil consumption problems is. i would hope the would own up to it and send out a tsb to their techs so they know how to diagnose and fix (even if the entire engine needs to be replaced). it would be even better if they would extend the warranty on the engines affected to say 7/100K.

2000-2002 tundras had an oxygen sensor problem (early failures). toyota redesigned the part, refunded money to those who bought new sensors out of warranty, and then extended warranty to all current owners to 7/90K on that sensor.
