If you just cut out the side to get air from the scoop, it would have to be sealed in order to prevent sucking hot air into the intake.
I just need to take the front scoop off. The R2C pulls from the bumper and under the hood where the stock airbox pulls from. The box needs to go up to the hood to prevent heatsoak on that side.

the intake you have is for the 350z... the one I have is for the g35. my intake doesnt have the heat shiled blocked off like yours. R2C sent me the one you have before but I knew it was wrong, so they sent me the correct one.

I figured that out when they sent it, but after looking at your pictures and playing around under the hood, I decided to keep this one. I like how it completely seals against the hood on 3 sides and only draws air from the front.
Even though you're box is getting air from the scoop, I would be afraid it still pulls in a little hot air from the engine bay.

I have the Stillen Z-tube, and Stillen Hi-Flow Intake... Definately a deeper growl when winding it out, quiet when driving normal (with the exception of the whisting sound a little louder i guess from the z-tube having no baffles), and it seems to work better than stock (noticed a littleee difference in power, but maybe its just in my head), it fits in place of the stock system, and keeps a somewhat stock appearance.
If I were to get another G, I would def. get the Stillen Z-tube and Hi-Flow Intake all over again.

Headers, HFCs, cat-back exhaust, CAI:
Won't be a deep rumble sound but it will definitely be louder!!!

Just google/youtube "Palomar Julian run 8-15-09 pt 3", You'll see the back of a white G35. The exhaust note is only in the first minute or so.
