Lightbulb Use the Apple iPad for nav??

So now we have all seen the iPad and I think it is pretty cool, but really just a giant iPhone. For a while now I have been saying that apple needs to make a car nav system, since all the ones out there now suck. A nav system with google maps and live traffic, searchable maps, etc.

So with the release of the iPad I think I can make my idea a reality. My idea that I have for my car now is to mount an iPad in the dash of the car for a nav system, music player, bluetooth phone, video playback, internet, and much more.

What do you all think?? Is this do-able?? do you think it is a lame idea??

Anyone care to photoshop a pic of what it may look like?? I've attached a couple pics you can play with the first two are of my current eclipse navi, and my lame attempt using paint

I'm really interested to see what you all think of this idea

Lame. You'd have to buy the 3g capable version and pay an extra $30/month. You're better off with the double din w/ navi.

I think its a cool idea, but not practical, too many distractions, too much money, but hey, you never know, it could catch on.

Yeah, this would be a good idea if you are able to hook it up to the cars speaker and bluetooth.

Plus it's detachable so you don't have to leave in it the car and worry about it.

And it can play videos, music, mp3, surf web, maybe even Navi.. I say it could be a good thing for those with money to waste.
But it would be a bltch to adjust the volume of the music playing etc etc. Unless you can somehow hook it up to the steering wheel controls.

A+ for creativity, but given that it's around 9.5"L x 7.5"W, it won't even fit the dash. You would need to cut a hole big enough that you would lose your climate control altogether...not worth it unless there was an app to control your a/c, haha. It would take some precise cuts and fiberglassing to give it a really good finished look. Aside from that, I'd hate to have a nice iPad permanently mounted to the dash of my car...defeats the purpose...Even if you made it detachable, you'd have a gaping hole in your dash when it's not in the car :P

I hope I'm not hijacking the thread, but I'm thinking about buying an iPad for reasons outside automotive use. But I would likely use it in my G as a music source. Does it respond the same way as any other iPod, i.e. once it's plugged into the G's iPod adapter can it only be controlled by the G's radio?

By the way, if you have a 3G iPad, I don't think you have to subscribe to any phone service to use the GPS feature. Not positive, but that's what I've heard.

Okay, so that's all cool and stuff, but can I simply plug the G's iPod cable into the iPad but still use the iPad to choose music? Or will the iPad not work in the G?
