Illuminated door sills anyone?

Re: Illuminated door sills anyone?
I just thought of an economic way to get illuminated door sills.
1) Go get some UV LED's (appx $5 each with harness) to be installed under the seats pointing toward those door sills.
2) Buy a glow-in-the-dark type marker and trace the word "INFINITI" appx $5
3) TADA! Now you have a semi-illuminated door sill that will light up whenever you open the doors.
I know it's not the real thing, but making illuminating door sills on our cars would be very difficult. Out door sills are made of a think flexible layer of aluminum with a plastic vaneer on top, and 1/4 thick ABS base underneath with clips. The combination of these materials will make it nearly impossible to mill out perfect letters and still maintain smoothness/form.

Re: Illuminated door sills anyone?
OK.....I need some help. I think I have found a way to maybe illuminate the door sills.
I bought a couple extra INFINITI door sills and tried to dremmel the aluminum piece. I dremmelled out one "I"..its too damn hard even with hi-speed fine tip cutting tool. The edges are uneven and rough. I don't think it can be done or maybe I just don't have the patience to do all the frickin letters. (I will post pix tonight of what I unsuccessfully did so far when I get home from work)
So, I studied the door sills on the car. There is a small groove in the insulating rubber above the actual door sill that I could insert the EL wire I bought for this project. Its fits perfect and I think will give off a subtle glow to shine on the door sill. It won't be true illuminated door sills like the Mercedes but may look good. Hopefully, won't look too rice.
(Again, I will post pix tonight of location I am thinking about)
i will defininately temporarily set up illumination and see how it looks first before I glue the EL cable to the rubber. If it looks too rice, will scrap project.
What I need assistance on is if the wiring I am planning on tapping into it right....I only want illumination to occur when doors open. This means I have to tap into the step lamp lights wires near the fuse box right? According the to Infiniti Service Manual LT-72, the step lamp terminal number is 47 with yellow wire w/ purple stripe.
Can I just tap the EL cable power wire into this step lamp power wire to get the effect desired? In terms of the ground, should I ground the EL wire to the chasis or into just box terminal #52 (designated ground terminal in fuse box)?
BTW, here is the EL lighting cable I am talking about....

I have the blue cable....
ANy help would be appreciated.
thanks,
doc

Re: Illuminated door sills anyone?
Now I know some of us think underdash lighting is pretty rice while others think its kinda cool mood lighting.
This illuminated door sill project is pretty worthless in end result since you only leave your door open for a couple seconds and you can only see it at night. It may look too bright and RICEY.
Can you tell I'm bored? I'm waiting for the APS Plenum and objective results on the Stillen VQ-PRO both coming out this fall. I needed something to do....lol
I'll try and figure out the wiring for the door sill and step lamp and try to see how the EL wire works......stay tuned.
