Tire Wear

Currently I have a 2003 G35 coupe with the stock 17" and Kumho ASX's with more than 70% tread life left.

I have the opportunity to purchase a set of graphite-painted 19" OEM Rays for $700. The tires have about 30% tread left, so they'll need to be replaced ASAP. I have my eyes set on Michelin Pilot Sport A/S, which runs for about $1,100 for the entire set in size 19. Altogether it'll be almost $2,000 including tax and labor at the local tire shop.

I understand that ride quality will obviously diminish, but my biggest concern is I don't want to be going through tires every 6 months. I'm a very laid-back driver (cornering at low speeds, absolutely no burnouts, drifting, etc.), and I don't track or autocross my car. Under those conditions, how many months/miles can I expect the set of tires to last? I drive at least 10,000 miles per year.

I've searched to no avail, most threads are about screwed up camber leading to uneven tire wear which luckily doesn't affect my car...at least not yet. Thanks for the feedback.

With the 19" OEM tires/wheels you'll notice a little difference in the ride but not extreem. Going from what you're using to Michelins is a very good move and you'll enjoy the better tires. Those Michelins are rated at what 240 AA A, that should give you no less than 25K miles of service. Make sure you have an alignment done after installing the new 19" set....just to be safe!

25-30k seems about right.

I wouldn't go with Michelin tho. There are better and cheaper tires out there for the kind of driving that you do.

True Joker, but Michelin makes such bitchen tires. Wet or dry you can depend on them reacting the same, not like some cheap azz tires that everyone thinks are so cooool....

there are tire that perform better in wet than Pilot Sport.

Overall I think Michelin cost too much for what it offers.

Just like I said, considering OPs driving style it makes no sense paying for features of the tire that he will never use (such as brand name )

25,000-30,000 is plenty miles for me, that's about 2.5-3 years. Is it possible to run 225/45 and 245/45 instead of 225/40 and 245/40?

Kind of funny. I knew about possible tire wear when I bought the car, but seeing as how I put around 22,000 km (13,670miles) on my Prelude with 5 years of use.. I'm not really concerned

I've had my G since Jan '10, when I got a brand new set of Michelin Pilot Sports on all corners & alignment. I replaced Eagle GT something or others, which I did not like at all. My driving style is similar to OP's, with some modification (I like to run it medium-hard once in a while, but no sliding/drifting). Weather is probably comparable, although we get a lot less rain. My impressions: the tires are really comfortable and quiet on factory 18" rims and grip well in dry conditions. In the wet they are a little hairy - very easy to slide on the outside front wheel or the rears. VDC takes care of that, but you'll need to modify driving style to keep the vehicle controlled. Overall I'm happy with them.

YO!

Not to hijack the thread, but I have NEW 19" A/S 2 Pilot Sports for sale man. I just got new rims and tires, these tires were on my ride before I bought the car NEW. They have about a month on the tires and they are sitting here in my shop. No one local here runs 19's so I'm trying to sell. I was asking 800 for all four here. If interested, seriously hit me up as I want them GONE! (I have to get coilovers ASAP before a car show coming up)

I loved the tires, just wanted to go with the Hankook EVO 12's on the new 20" rims.
