Mounting Radar/Laser Detector

Mounting Radar/Laser Detector
Just got the Escort 8500 x50.
Just want to know if it's okay to mount this baby over the rearvew mirror. I saw that the warning says don't place behind tinted areas of the windshield. Is it ok?

Re: Mounting Radar/Laser Detector
try to put it so it's JUST BENEATH the tint strip. The reason why they say that is because it those strips tend to contain metals, which cut out radar signal. This in turn reduces your ability to detect radar, which of course is BAD.
Personally I put mine just to the right of the mirror. High enough so that it won't block my vision (right of mirror too, so that helps) and high enough that you can't see/notice it just by glancing at the car from the outside.
Also high enough that you are very unlikely to have direct sunlight on it during the day... which helps it last longer.

Re: Mounting Radar/Laser Detector
The tint strip seriously hinders radar performance, but you can do it. Perhaps it doesn't hurt it that much, but a great location is right under or beside the rear-view mirror. I have the 8500 X50 and I have mine placed under the rear-view mirror. It's not in my way EVER (even when parking and stuff) and it's very easy to see. I have it hard-wired and my remote mute button is located next to my shift ****, which is great for all those stupid false alarms.

Re: Mounting Radar/Laser Detector
Someone had a mounting piece that made it so it would hang off the rear-view mirror. Not using the windshield attachment, but a whole new piece altogether. Anyone know what i'm talking about?
Looks like i'm gonna have to buy the hardwire kit. Another 30 bucks.

Hey, I think you are talking about this one:
I got it over at my350z.com from Mike Petronek. I can give you his email if you'd like. Sells them for $20. Shoot me a PM.

Re: Mounting Radar/Laser Detector
Go ahead and mount it above the mirror. I've had my V1 there for over a year. I'm sure you lose some range but not enough to get you busted. With radar you either get a warning or they get you with instant on. It's great for security too because you can't see it from the outside.

Re: Mounting Radar/Laser Detector
I hard-wired mine behind the mirror so it won't be visible from the outside - works like a champ!

Speaking of Passport 8500, what mode do you leave it on? It has City, Auto and Highway and was wondering if I should manually switch the mode depending where I drive or simply keep it on Auto at all times.

I leave it on "Highway" where most of my driving takes place.

arent they suppose to be pointing towards the road and not the sky??
we aint trying to detect police helicopters hehehe.

It's not pointing to the skies, just mounted high. My Passport is mounted behind the mirror (invisible from the outside as it's behind the tint strip) but is pointing straight ahead with a 0º angle.

Re: Mounting Radar/Laser Detector
I use mine in the auto mode, and it helps to have the mute button on the remote display close at hand for city driving. As far as the display, I use it in the multiple detection/strength mode, where it will show a little bar for each source, up to 8 total. I'd rather know how many radars are in the area, and what their strengths are, rather than just getting the readout of the strongest one, cause that might just be a stoplight, and a cop could be sitting a few blocks away, and you'd never know it until you saw his flashing lights.
