Coupe windows in freezing weather

That neat thing they do with zipping up after you close the door. They zip down as you open. For those of you with coupes who have had them for at least one winter, did you encounter any problems with the window when the door was frozen shut? I'm just wondering if you could damage or even break the window trying to open the door on a frigid, snowy or icy morning. Any experiences?

Re: Coupe windows in freezing weather

My car is not garaged, and I live in the Northeast. Last winter we had several snow/ice storms, and I became concerned as well....

I noticed after the first real cold snap that the drivers window would not go down as far as on warm days........I also had a few days where the window hardly moved at all......this did worry me, but I was always able to open the door and close it again without any problems.....

Just last weekend my motor stopped working on the the drivers door, and Monday its is going in for replacement......

I do not know if there is anything we could do to eliminate the freezing up problem........Once some water and ice build up on the weather strips and the temp drops below freezing, I think you just have to me careful.....

A couple of times I very gently would push against the window to see if it would help to release it, and sometimes it seemed to help.....

Man, I was thinking that could be an issue. Did you ever use de-icer on it? I may just leave it parked those days anyway. We don't have a ton of them here. Some, but not as many as you. Thanks for the info.

Re: Coupe windows in freezing weather

I had this problem a few times the first week I had my coupe (last January). Then it went away. I'm not sure why it went away - the weather didn't change.

Even when the windows were frozen shut, I could still open and close the door without damage. Just be very careful if the windows might be frozen shut.

i, living in houston texas dont have this problem.... i was told when i bought my car tho that if the battery dies and i am using my key to get into my car the windows wont roll down and that when im opening the door i need to push down on it (towards the ground) so that the window top clears that little cutout that it rolls up into

Re: Coupe windows in freezing weather

TarheelGuy,
I did think about using de-icer, but was fearful it would possibly stain the rubber along the door, and maybe even mess with the clearcoat on the paint.......

I did consider spraying WD 40 along the window and door seal, but then I figured it would smear along the window when it was raised and lowered.....

I may just try the WD 40 this time, and leave the window up, since if its cold enough for ice, I don't think I would use the window much anyway.......

Don't know what they where thinking with this one.......

As much as I found this little "extra" to be exciting at first, I almost wish the windows just operated in a normal fashion......I'm sure that would have saved everyone a lot less hassle with these motors failing constantly......They supposedly changed vendors, and the new or replacement motors should be better.....lets hope, I can't imagine having to replace the motors every year after the warranty is gone!!!!!!!

Re: Coupe windows in freezing weather

Indeed. That would add up $$$ and be inconvenient as well. I wanted to stay away from the de-icer as well for the same reasons. Hopefully this won't be a problem at all since I'm planning on getting a second car (beater) in December for driving to work. That way I can always leave the G parked when there's bad weather. Besides, I had 44K on my G sedan when I traded it so I want to keep the miles down and cut out most of the cummute miles. Why do the windows do this little thing anyway? Aerodynamic related perhaps?

Re: Coupe windows in freezing weather

I live in Ottawa Canada and noticed that my G35C window were also freezing in sub-zero wheather. The solution to prevent any damage is to pull both windows down by 1/4 inch or so. This will prevent any damage to the frame resulting from frozen windows

Good idea. So when you do this then shut the door they don't do their little zip up thing? I'll have to try that tomorrow. Thanks!

Re: Coupe windows in freezing weather

when i lived in montreal i used rain-x on all my windows, and i swore by it, VERY easy to scrape off the ice in the mornings alot less work for me, sometimes my neighbors would be taking the ice off their cars and i wouldn't have ANY!...... long story short rain-x is basically a wax for your windows so they wouldn't stick together (window to rubber seal) it might make it alot easier on your windows.
