odometer rollback possible??

So here's the situation guys. Bought that 04 G35 coupe recently in very good condition. The guy said it was not driven in winter. So I call the dealership where it was serviced. They said last time they saw it was 2.5 years ago, and since that time he put on ONLY 10k kilometers on it. (= 6.2k miles). I'm not too concerned where was maintenance done for the past 2 years but 10k kms in 2.5 years is suspicious. How easy is it to tamper and roll back the odomter on the G. Currently the car has 85k kms on it.

Thanks!

There are a few ways of doing it, but the easiest way is to swap the gauge cluster with one with lower miles. The mileage is stored in the gauge cluster itself so if it is replaced with another one with lower miles it will keep the lower mileage on the new cluster.

It can be reprogrammed digitally however this usually requires the same scan tool the dealer uses. It is possible that someone had access to one and did it though. So that is another way.

There are other ways too but that is the most common. In short, it is possible, and its just like doing it on any other car.

My '04 only has 30K miles on it's clock, I just don't drive it that much since we have another car. Nissan/Infiniti has no record of my changing oil/filter that's because I DIM but I have receipts.

It's do-able, but 10k kms in that amount of time is suspiciouns. However if he didnt do winter, that's 2 summers so it's possible. And he did mention he had hook-ups at dealership

Any car can be rolled back, starting to hear a lot of ppl doing this (in TO anyways ~$300to have it rolled back to any mileage you like) makes me think twice about buying a car that has very low kms

I'd stay away from that car, the carfax is telling you it's something suspicious. I'd bring it to a friend to look at and make sure it wasn't tampered with.

Doesn't the ECU store the mileage also? Even if they changed out the gauge cluster, the ECU would still keep its own counter. I think even with the analog odometers the ECU would always keep track of the mileage.

I used to work at a dealership.. It is possible that the dealership made a mistake. If you don't feel good about it... Don't do it! The right G will come around.

Maybe, but I read that it's possible to change the reading with a laptop and proper software in seconds these days
