Rattle after shut down?

I've done a search and only found rattles on other parts (interiors and clutch).

Is it normal to hear rattles when turning the car off? It sounds like the timing chain? Another good description is that it sounds similar to how a diesel truck engine sounds during shut down.

I was given a "test" car to drive around prior to my purchase and it did the same thing. I checked the car I was about to buy to make sure it did not have the same sound; and it didn't at the time. Both cars were/are brand new.

It now rattles when shutting down...similar to the other I drove.

Anyone else experience this? solutions?

Thanks!

Yes, my car does the exact same thing. i brought it in to the dealer and he said that was normal. Now to me, a 37,000 car should not make any sounds like that. Ive never heard any other car do that. just seems kind of weird and irratating.

Bad Gas. Happen to me too. Did you just put in gas you never use before? if so that's it.

I get the same noises too. If it's normal, I can deal with it. If it's not, then well.. I would like to get it fixed.. lol. Let me know if you follow-up with this problem or if other people know if this is a normal thing or not..

Push in the clutch when you turn the car off.

Re: Rattle after shut down?

My guess, remember now... just a guess, would be that it is not bad gas, seems too improbable, the knocking after shutdown, it just doesn't happen on current cars. I would bet my money on a natural vibration that occurs after the engine is shut down and coming to a halt, this vibration travels through the abundandt rigid material and vibrates the tranny just right to produce another rattle a second after shut down. This second rattle is probably what we are hearing, and is probably the tranny vibrating. The suggestion to shut down with the clutch in to see if it remedies the situation is interesting, I will have to try it next time. At least this will eliminate a few suspected parts of the drivetrain. Nonetheless, I don't think it is a big deal.

Re: Rattle after shut down?

You guys with the gas theories are on the wrong track.

The rattling sound you hear is your transmission.
If you read www.6mt.net, search for "cement mixer noise in
tranny". Everyone with the 6mt experiences it, it's normal.
Unpleasant, but normal.

This is most apparent if you park in a garage. Turn off your
car and listen carefully.

Re: Rattle after shut down?

Sounds like this may be normal. I don't believe the gas issue, because I just filled up with Chevron 93 and it still does it.

It's annoying because I have not had any other manuals do this (yet) and it sounds "cheap" for a 37K ride.

I guess I will learn to live with it....

Re: Rattle after shut down?

I've got the cement mixer/chatter taking off in 1st gear and the diesel noise for a second after I shut down. I'll try the clutch thing and see if that helps.

Does any AT owner's hear this noise or is this just an MT thing.

There must be something wrong with your transmission then!
Just kidding. It's sad that obnoxious noises from the tranny
are "normal" on the 350Z/G35. I've had the cement mixer
noise since I bought the car brand new. I drove it home from
the dealer lot with 14 miles on the OD, parked it in the
garage, turned it off and heard the dreaded sound.

al503: As far as I know, this sound only occurs on the
6mt. The automatic is a completely different design.

Re: Rattle after shut down?

I have the same noise, I think it's normal for RWD cars, sounds like the driveshaft rattling in the pumpkin... Same type of noise as leaving the car in neutral with the clutch out just amplified on shutdown.
