Hood Hits on Drivers Fender

2005 G35 Coupe

Car was serviced at walmart tire lube and express. They reported that the engine had been somewhat low on oil the last two oil changes. In disbelief as soon as I got home I went to pop the hood and check the oil level.

The hood will raise 10 inches up and then meets resistance. The rear drivers corner of the hood hits on the fender, the only way to bypass this is with force, and a loud audible pop from the fender. There is no interference with the hood when it is returns to its starting position.

The car has never been in a accident. WTF is going on here? I'm wondering if the hinge is catching, maybe just needs lubrication?

Common problem, sticky/damaged hinge, search it up. If it's not too far gone, you can fix it with some spray lithium grease in the hinge, that will allow it to function properly and will then miss the fender on the way up. Be sure to protect your fender with a piece of cloth or something next time you open/close to grease the hinge.

I can't believe Nissan can't even design a proper hinge for the hood. lol If you take a look at it, it's one of the most crappiest designed ever for a hinge. You can make a better one out of Legos.

And yes, the hinges would dry up over time and if you don't take any precautions, the hood will start to rub against the finder. It's one of the many common problems with the G.

the same thing was happening to mine when I got it. Tried adjusting the fender but that didn't work. Had to adjust the hood. Just loosen the bolts on the drivers side, just a little bit, and slightly slide the hood to the side. Hold the hood with your right hand and let it rest on your shoulder for support. Should be an easy fix as mine was.

if the hood is hitting the fender now and wasn't hitting before then something has obviously moved. i don't think its a hinge issue - sounds like you just need to loosen the bolts on the hood and adjust.

do you have equal gaps on both sides of the hood? does the hood rub on the bumper on either side of the grill? has anyone hit or leaned heavily against the fender recently?

Just greasing worked for me, but yeah, it could be something moved. Likely the toolbags at Wally World yarded your hood up by the corner and moved something. You may be able to tell by looking at the bolts whether they appear to have moved, i.e. a clean sliver of metal beside the mount.

Not necessarily true. The hinge on mine started to cease up after a long winter. Re-greased it and it's been fine since. Just have to regularly lube these hood hinges. Didn't need to adjust the hood at all.

I live on the ocean, that is probably why its gummed up, damn salt in the air. Luckily I just bought another house with a garage.

I will try some white lithium grease tonight, see how that goes.

The hood does line up, the gaps all look equal. The car has never been in an accident.

Thanks guys.
