is this normal?

when I open the door the window goes down about 1/4" than when i shut it the window goes back up?

yes... normal...

Prevents you from slamming/jamming your fingers when you close your door..

No, it's to positively seal the window. Since a typical coupe doesn't have frames around the window, they only seal using the pressure of the door being closed against it. The G and Z push the window up into the seal when you close the door. The difference? My 240sx used to leak air past the seals at over 100 mph. The G is still exceptionally quiet at that speed. Some other luxo-coupes use the same type of technology.
