timing belt or chain?

Re: timing belt or chain?
Pretty much Nissan is one of the few manufacturers that has stuck with a timing chain throughout the years. Of course there are some exceptions in their stables.

Guys, there's no such animal as a 'chain belt'. A belt is rubber and a chain is steel (or chrome moly). Chains run behind engine covers because they have to be oiled.
All of the VQ series engines use timing chains. That would include the Altima, Maxima, G35 (both), Murano...you get the picture. You'll also note that the lowly 1.8 liter Sentra engine uses a timing chain as well. They just last much longer, and even then, they don't break like a rubber belt will.

Re: timing belt or chain?
nissan uses chains
honda uses belts because they are quieter and will absorb some shocks . the timing chain runs the overhead cams.
a pain when you need to replace belts every 100,000km and should replace the water pump at the same time. chain is good for about 400,000km.
the belt that you see is the serpentine belt that runs the alternator air conditioning compressor etc.

Easiest thing to do is pop the hood and note the absence of belts and sprocket/pulley's off the front of the heads. You can also take a walk through several of the engine pictures posted to this board and see the same. Or if in doubt, call your local Nissan/Infinti service department and ask.
If you search the web for Nissan VQ V6 chain, you'll come up with several postings where the various Nissan products that use 'silent timing chains'. Chains are louder then belts, but they are much more durable too.
There's also a article in Ward's Auto a few years ago where Nissan stated that as much as 90% of their products will have engines with chains instead of belts.

Re: timing belt or chain?
Yeah, the VQ35's definitely have timing chains. I remember reading about this on several web sites reviewed the engine before I decided to get a G35, because I hate engines with timing belts. I'm pretty sure the old VQ's (early 90's) had timing belts. I remember my friend had a 1991 Infiniti M30 with the 3.0L VQ, and he needed to have the timing belt replaced. They had to remove the engine from that car to replace the belt. I definitely didn't want to go through that, so I made sure the G35 had a chain before buying. I don't care what anyone says, timing belts suck. Yeah, they're slightly quieter, but the #1 reason companies use belts is they are CHEAPER. Kuddos to Nissan for using chains.
If you further don't believe us, check your owner's manual maintenance section. If there was a timing belt that needed to be replaced, you'd see it there among the maintenance requirements, about once every 60k. You won't find it.
