Really? I've seen them do the installation. They pre-cut the film to make sure its a perfect fit.
Then spray some soapy water and align everything up. Use a credit card to get rid of all the bubbles and as much water as possible.
Then they use the heat-gun to get rid of the water. If it does shrink it is very minimal.

You can't lay a square piece of film on a curved glass, cut it, and expect it to sit flat. You literally have to shrink the film to fit the curve, THEN cut it when it has assumed the form of the glass. The heat gun is primarily to get the fit right. Most of the water will squeegee out with the cards you were talking about, and sun will actually do a better job than any heat gun will for getting the rest out.
Even some side windows, like those on newer Mustangs, have to get some heat to fit the glass properly. Strips across the windshield? There too. There can be some massive shrinking if the glass is curved enough.
Heat shrinking is absolutely integral to window tinting. If a place doesn't do that, they're not worth your time or money.

all the people who used the word, "never", you will not def. get hassled on this topic...
*knockonwood* It's just that word... I try not to use that word in my vocab list. =)
Cal, Who is your buddy who has 50% windshield? I want to check it out, if possible. I almost dont see a difference in the 70% that I have now. I want the 50%!!!!

Full Wrap with Solar Gard Ultra Performance 60
I just tinted mine today. I did a full wrap (all windows including windshield) with Solar Gard highest end film, Ultra Performance 60 (64% light transparency & 40% heat reduction).
http://solargard.com/Auto/Ultra
$425 for a complete wrap w/ windshield or $275-300 w/o.
I wanted superior heat reduction, subtle classy tint, consistency (not dark in the back & light in the front), and to avoid being harassed from the law. Especially since I have my windshield done.
Solar Gard Ultra Performance, Huper Ceramic, LLemar Ceramic, and Johnson Ceramic is the way to go. If you want all the benefits (UV protection, heat reduction) in a clear film.
Here's a pic of the tint job.
