How to ship rims?

Anybody have any ideas on the best method for shipping rims. I get quotes for over $1000. From UPS, FedEx etc. Is there a cheaper way to ship these things?

That's insane, I shipped a pair of HEAVY rims across most of the country recently for 80 bucks. Purolator.

$1000 is a a bit steep. I've shipped a set of 18" bbs's across state lines via 2 day air for $450

Why are your quotes from Fedex/UPS $1000? What method are you trying to ship? When I shipped rims Fedex/UPS was $40/wheel for ground but will be a bit higher depending on how much you are insuring the wheel for and how heavy/large it is.

You should ship them in actual boxes though. Sounds obvious but it isn't.

Might consider greyhound - i shipped 5 wheels/tires for a jeep across the country for 400 bucks - got them in 3 days. Only drawback is they have to pick up at the nearest greyhound station

Yeah I thought $1000 was incredibly steep too. I couldn't see how it was even feasible to ship at those costs. The estimates I got were online quotes. I will do it the old fashioned way and call someone

What wheels are you shipping? What dimensions did you put?

No need to call anyone... What are the sizes and weights of the wheels you're trying to ship? If you don't have boxes for the wheels I would suggest calling your local wheel/tire shop. They have wheel boxes they throw away on a daily basis and they'll give them to you if you need some. You just have to go through them to find which ones will fit the wheels you're shipping. Then get the dimensions of each box and weights and go thru the process. It's surprisingly cheap to do. You'll spend less than $100 in most cases. If you're shipping internationally it will be more expensive obviously. Also if you're shipping wheels and tires you'll probably spend a little more, but you won't need boxes.

My buddy bought 19"s with tires awhile back from CA shipping to FL.

Shipping was a little under $300 w/$4k insurance using Fedex. UPS was also in the ballpark while USPS was slightly less expensive. No boxes used, think it was ~50 lbs per wheel/tire.

I shipped my 19's Work T1S for about 60 each insured with signature required.

Using the OEM box from Works, and some extra padding I added... Shipped 4 box and UPS came to my house to pick it up.

i shipped my 19" Volk TE37/TA's with tires with USPS + TRACKING+INSURANCE for around $200-$225.

i just used bubble wrapping and wrapped each spoke and then laid 4 layers of
cardboard around the rim and taped the sheit out of each one.

it got to the buyer with no damage

This has gotta be a joke, what planet are you shipping them to? I've had wheels/tires shipped to me from the right coast and it was less than $200 via UPS ground. I can see the $1k cost for next day air, but that wouldn't be too smart! Like our members mentiond get wheel boxes and ship them UPS ground, coast to coast takes 5 to 7 days depending on the weather, cost s/b no more than $200....this thread is a joke, right?

Greyhound will work fine, I had a complete passenger seat ship to me on greyhound. Go to a tire shop and ask if you can have shipping boxes that the same size wheels came in. You can tape two boxes together and then you just have two packages instead of four. I think you can ship them for less than $80.

I think I may have been a joking. I'm looking again and to go coast to coast 5-7 day its around $300-$400. I'm not sure what I was smoking or looking at.
