Why are your quotes from Fedex/UPS $1000? What method are you trying to ship? When I shipped rims Fedex/UPS was $40/wheel for ground but will be a bit higher depending on how much you are insuring the wheel for and how heavy/large it is.
You should ship them in actual boxes though. Sounds obvious but it isn't.

No need to call anyone... What are the sizes and weights of the wheels you're trying to ship? If you don't have boxes for the wheels I would suggest calling your local wheel/tire shop. They have wheel boxes they throw away on a daily basis and they'll give them to you if you need some. You just have to go through them to find which ones will fit the wheels you're shipping. Then get the dimensions of each box and weights and go thru the process. It's surprisingly cheap to do. You'll spend less than $100 in most cases. If you're shipping internationally it will be more expensive obviously. Also if you're shipping wheels and tires you'll probably spend a little more, but you won't need boxes.

This has gotta be a joke, what planet are you shipping them to? I've had wheels/tires shipped to me from the right coast and it was less than $200 via UPS ground. I can see the $1k cost for next day air, but that wouldn't be too smart! Like our members mentiond get wheel boxes and ship them UPS ground, coast to coast takes 5 to 7 days depending on the weather, cost s/b no more than $200....this thread is a joke, right?

Greyhound will work fine, I had a complete passenger seat ship to me on greyhound. Go to a tire shop and ask if you can have shipping boxes that the same size wheels came in. You can tape two boxes together and then you just have two packages instead of four. I think you can ship them for less than $80.
