5AT Suck or Not bad?
5AT Suck or Not bad?
Question about my 03 coupe 5AT. How are the 5AT compared to the 6MT. If you were going to race one at a 1/4 mile track both stock who would win? The reason I ask this is I used to own a 1993 Mustang GT 5 spd a while ago. The mustang automatic tranny was known to be the worst. If I were to race a stock one with my 5 speed I would waste on it. It was about a whole second slower in the 1/4 mile. Are Infiniti's 5AT better than that. Would a 6MT waste on me?
ALSO, I notice that my 5AT is pretty slow at shifting. In auto mode, it takes a second or two to kick down after I punch it. In manual mode, it takes about a second to upshift after I click it forward. Is there anything you can do to these 5AT's that make them shift a lot faster?

Re: 5AT Suck or Not bad?
Yeah same here, if I want to race anyone then I stick it into manual mode as it reacts quicker to my shift but cruising to work and back I just leave it in AT mode.

Re: 5AT Suck or Not bad?
I might have to upgrade some time soon if it makes a big difference. Maybe somebody that has done it already will let us know how it is.
Has anybody raced a 6MT and was it close or did you get killed?

I would check to see if this voids the warranty. If not, it sounds like an interesting upgrade.

Definitely doesn't suck.
I like my A/T...It's got 5 gears, and is tough enough to go in the Q.
Manual mode is good and quick enough shifting for me, and not much slower than the 6M/T.

Re: 5AT Suck or Not bad?
Truth be told, many people find that plain old D is just as fast as MM mode (MAYBE a tenth slower in 1/4). The reason it feels crisper in the manumatic mode is probably due to the computer not retarding timing as much on the tranny. Nonetheless, if you flat out haul in D mode with the pedal floored, I doubt it would be a noticeable difference in speed (my from personal experience). The manual mode is good because it enables the driver to hold the gear longer for sweeping turns and autocross/drifting track events but from looking at past slips, the MM mode doesn't really shift much quicker overall.
BTW, the reason the G auto is close to the G manual is probably due to the G having generous amounts of torque and a 5 speed auto instead of a 4 speed auto. With this much torque, a closely geared transmission isn't necessarily required to achieve good speeds. The overall effect is that the G auto is almost fast as the G manual.

they managed 14.66@98.32mph
not bad huh? considering MT runs around 14.2-4s@98-100(?)
also they clocked 0-60 @ 6.2 without brake torque(they ran with 17s with sucky tires not 18s with PS tires)... i think they could reduce few tenths if they run with 18s with brake torque
pretty impressive if u ask me...
from a roll or dig, it will be very close race, but always advantage goes to MT tho...

Re: 5AT Suck or Not bad?
I have a 6MT and I once raced a 5AT Coupe (18" wheels also). We started from 30mph in 3rd gear and we took it all the way up to 85mph. I don't know if he used manual mode, but I know that we both started from 3rd and neither of us gained an inch on each other all the way to 80-85, from what I can tell. We were literally just accelerating full throttle, side-by-side, the whole time...it was kinda cool too since the other guy's G was black like mine.

That would have been a sight to see. I once went to a meet in LA where 26 3000gt's went together, we had all 4 lanes just covered with our cars...now that was cool.

Re: 5AT Suck or Not bad?
do a search " G vs G" and you might find some old stories. From what I've experienced, it is too close to call under "real" conditions (not mag racing). Remember the major mags test before break-in and with multiple runs- posting the best run.

Re: 5AT Suck or Not bad?
Totally depends on the driver. Put a rookie in an AT he'll be faster than in an MT. Put someone who really knows how to get the most out of an MT and he'll be a few clicks faster than an AT. Most AT's in quality cars these days are pretty close to MT's. The G's AT is pretty good IMO. I don't like the adaptive learning of the AT though. I prefer user selected modes e.g. sport, touring, other...

Re: 5AT Suck or Not bad?
I'd like to add the following:
As my Coupe is a 6MT and is a daily driver, I also have to say that for regular driving around, an automatic is way faster. When autos shift gears, they shift really fast and they don't stop accelerating. In my 6MT, I go to 3K in 1st, and then I have to push the clutch in and shift and wait for the revs to drop to the right blevel before letting the clutch out again. The 1-2 shift is the slowest, the 2-3 shift is a little less slow, and so on and so fourth.
Basically, auto is faster for daily driving. Only when you really wind up the 6MT and make the fast shifts, that is when it's fast.
The 0-60 difference between the 6MT Coupe and 5AT Coupe is marginal AT BEST. Meaning, the deciding factor between the two is more about whether you prefer auto or your prefer manual (whichever you enjoy more and is more practical for you, basically).
